Attack on KP's Daraban checkpost foiled​

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Police foiled an attack by terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan on a checkpost in the Daraban area here, officials said.

They said that terrorists attacked the checkpost using heavy weapons. The police responded with retaliatory fire, forcing the attackers to flee.

No casualties were reported among the police personnel during the attack, officials said.

Cop martyred in Peshawar attack​

PESHAWAR: A policeman was martyred when unknown assailants opened fire at him in the Mattani area on the outskirts of the provincial capital on Thursday night, officials said on Friday.

They said that funeral prayers for the constable Farooq Shah, a resident of Maryamzai, were offered at Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines.

Capital City Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed, Chief Traffic Officer Dr Zahidullah, SSP Operations Farhan Khan, senior military, CTD and police officials attended the funeral.

Meanwhile, the police on Friday claimed to have killed three murder suspects, including two Afghan nationals, in an exchange of fire here.

A statement issued by the city police said that the three persons, members of what police called Nuray Gang, had killed six persons in the Jamil Chowk area on April 26, 2025.

The statement added that the gang members were present in the Akhun Baba graveyard when police raided the place. The outlaws opened fire on the police team, triggering an exchange of fire, in which they were killed.

The city police said that they recovered two pistols and a Kalashnikov from the gang members.

Security forces kill over 20 terrorists during multiple engagements in KP: ISPR​

Security forces killed over 20 terrorists during multiple engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between September 3 and 5, the military’s media affairs wing said on Sunday.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the slain terrorists were sponsored by India and belonged to Fitna-al-Khawarij — a term the state uses for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The ISPR statement mentioned an engagement in KP’s North Waziristan on the night between August 31 and September 1. Security forces had initially killed 15 terrorists who were trying to infiltrate into Pakistan through its border with Afghanistan at the time.

Following that, 10 more terrorists holed up in the area were killed, the statement said, adding that a total of 25 terrorists trying to enter Pakistan had been killed in that event.

In another encounter in North Waziristan, movement of another group of terrorists along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border was picked up by the security forces. “Own troops effectively engaged this group of khawarij. As a result of precise and skillful engagement, seven khawarij were neutralised,” the ISPR statement said.

Separately, four more terrorists were killed in two different encounters in Kohat and Dera Ismail Khel during joint operations, according to ISPR.

It said, “These repeated incidents along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have once again vindicated Pakistan’s persistent stance regarding the abject failure of the Afghan Taliban regime to deny the use of Afghan soil to the terrorist organisation, under their patronage, for cross-border terrorism.

“The Afghan Taliban regime has consistently failed to ensure effective border management and honour its international counter-terrorism obligations.”

How KP police are countering drone attacks with Ukraine-style nets​

Resembling fishing nets, the mesh can scupper attacks by entangling enemy drones or by catching munitions, like mortars or grenades, high above the compounds.


White nets stretch high across the front of brick buildings in Pakistan’s northern border region, a tactic borrowed from the Ukrainian battlefield to protect police against the latest terrorist threat — drones.

Resembling fishing nets, the mesh lacks the sophistication of other military hardware.

Their use shows how lessons from the war in Ukraine are reverberating on distant fronts such as Pakistan, where security forces are improvising new defences against terrorists armed with the cheap, easily obtainable devices.

“These drones are easily available in markets, and with a bit of modification a kit for dropping shells can be installed. So it is quite easy and everyone has access to them,” Khyber District Police Officer Waqar Ahmad told AFP.

“We have started installing these … nets to protect our personnel from aerial attacks and to reduce the risk of attacks involving drones.”

Made from extra-durable thread, the bespoke, reinforced nets can scupper attacks by entangling enemy drones or by catching munitions, like mortars or grenades, high above the compounds so that they cause less damage if they explode.

They are suspended several metres above the ground, between the top of the front of buildings and roadside concrete walls, forming a protective canopy.

In some frontline Ukrainian cities, nets are hung high and wide across long stretches of road, forming corridors like spiders’ webs to thwart aerial attacks.

Draped over the facade of several police premises in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan, the nets are a new line of defence alongside concrete blocks and other barriers.

KP is experiencing a surge in terrorist attacks by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), with dozens of police officials martyred in attacks on checkpoints this year.

Police are playing catch-up against the group, which has deployed drones extensively in attacks since 2024.

About 30 per cent of police stations still lack their own devices, a senior officer in Peshawar told AFP.


Drones are readily available at specialised electronics shops across the province, with AFP finding them in around a dozen such stores in shopping malls in Peshawar alone.

They have become a vital part of the TTP’s attack toolkit, used not only to strike targets but also for surveillance.

Another senior officer from KP said the terrorists use drones to monitor “every movement” of their operations, “which creates serious difficulties for us in countering them”.

Police are also racing to harness the technology, putting on training courses and stocking up on the machines and counter-drone devices such as handheld jammers.

Last month, KP police’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Division held the force’s first-ever drone course, with 52 participants.

For Muhammad Aamir, a policeman posted at a checkpoint along a road in the province, the nets, alongside boundary walls, have “considerably” reduced the risk of drone attacks and hand grenades being lobbed at the building.

“These incidents caused significant damage and casualties among the police and other security forces. However, the situation has improved now,” the 38-year-old told AFP.

But with attacks continuing to claim lives, locals say police need to do more to protect them.

“We want some peace and security in this area. Either the police post should be removed from this location, or the authorities should eliminate the threat posed by the Taliban (TTP) from this area,” said 48-year old corn seller Gul Haleem.

Cop martyred, another injured in attack on police team in KP's Karak​

LAKKI MARWAT: A policeman was martyred and another sustained bullet injuries when unknown armed men targeted a police patrol party in the Shatakai dam area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district late on Tuesday night.

The district police officer’s (DPO) spokesperson, Shaukat Khan, said in a statement that the police party was on routine patrol duty in the area within the limits of Sabirabad Police Station when the attack took place.

He said that Constable Zafran lost his life in the attack while Constable Muhammad Imtiaz was seriously wounded.

The official said that the body and the injured cop were transferred to a hospital.

Following the attack, a large contingent of police led by DPO Imran Khan reached the spot, surrounded the entire area, and launched a search for the assailants, the spokesman said, adding that additional force was also deployed at various points to keep track of the movements of suspicious persons and foil any bid by attackers to flee.

He reaffirmed the force’s determination to bring the attackers into the tight clutches of the law soon.
