Editorial: When it comes to combatting violent terrorism, the state’s efforts seem to be suffering from a lack of focus. The policy confusion at the top tier was evident in the remarks made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a recent meeting of the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan. On the one hand, PM Sharif seemed worried about terrorist infiltration and stressed the need for all stakeholders to collaborate with security forces to eliminate the threat. At the same time, however, he also took the opportunity to make divisive remarks targeting the main opposition party, describing it as being involved in “anti-state activities” and seemingly equating its confrontational activities with the violence perpetrated by actual terrorists. As prime minister, he really should have spoken more circumspectly.

Two policemen martyred in Lakki Marwat: official​

Two police constables were martyred on Monday when unidentified gunmen riding motorbikes opened fire at them in Lakki Marwat’s Jabukhel area, an official said.

Police Department’s Spokesperson Shahid Hameed confirmed the incident and said that it occurred within the limits of the Ghanikhel police station.

He said that the assailants “opened fire on Constables Hikmatullah and Khan Bahadar when they were going to their duty place on a motorcycle from Kherukhel Pacca area”.

“Both of them received critical bullet injuries and died instantly while the attackers fled the place on a motorcycle,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the martyred police officials were deployed at the Shaheed Haibat Ali Khan police station of Darra Pezu town and Shahbazkhel police station, respectively.

“The bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital Tajazai for post-mortem examination,” he said, adding that a heavy contingent of law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, launching a search operation to apprehend the attackers.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Two women’s garment shops looted, torched in Wana​

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Two shops selling women’s clothing were looted and torched in Karikot Bazaar of Wana tehsil here on Monday night.

Local residents and police said that the perpetrators first looted the shops and later set fire to them. They escaped the area. The shops were owned by Ejaz Wazir and Najeeb Wazir.

Lower South Waziristan district police officer Asif Bahader confirmed the incident, but said that the cause of the fire was unknown. He said that an investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, armed men launched a brazen attack on a joint checkpost of Frontier Corps and police in Daza Ghundai area of Wana tehsil on Sunday night. However, the assault was repelled by the FC and police personnel, forcing the attackers to escape.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents, who are increasingly worried about the deteriorating security situation in Lower South Waziristan.

The region has witnessed a string of unpleasant incidents in recent times, leaving citizens on edge. The attack on the FC post is the latest in a series of security breaches in the area.

The residents have urged the authorities to take immediate steps for their safety.

Terrorists move out of Tirah plains​

KHYBER: Armed terrorists, affiliated with various groups, are understood to have gradually moved out of the plains of Tirah valley here, taking refuge in vacant houses in the hilly terrain, as security forces have fortified their positions in key locations of the valley.

Sources in the region told Dawn that the situation in most parts of the valley was calm, with no major terror-related incident reported last month.

They said the armed terrorists, who were frequently seen in different parts of Tirah valley, had either returned to Afghanistan or shifted to the bordering Orakzai district, with some opting to “settle down” in partially damaged houses in the peripheral hilly areas to avoid public attention.

The sources said terrorists had shifted to Sanda Paal, Dray Naghari and Daroota villages before taking refuge in empty houses.

They said those areas were vacated by residents in November last year in anticipation of a military operation after a surge in terrorist attacks on military convoys and security checkposts.

Residents of Kamarkhel, Takhtaki, Ghulam Ali and Sukh localities told Dawn that terrorists would suddenly barge into their houses and demand food and other essential items.

They said that the ‘unwanted’ presence of terrorists in their houses “at odd times” had led to them into a constant fear of a targeted action by the security forces for sheltering them.

The residents insisted that terrorists had not caused them any personal harm to them, so they couldn’t refuse food and shelter to them, especially when they’re heavily armed.

Local sources claimed that the terrorists were always on the move for fear of a targeted operation by the security forces.

Regarding the identity and affiliations of terrorists, they revealed that armed men were associated with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Lashkar-i-Islam, Amarat-i-Islami and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, which were operational in parts of the valley.

The sources said that though the exact number of terrorists who had shifted to the hilly areas for fear of a full-fledged military operation was not known, they totaled 70-100, with the rest fleeing the valley for the time being.

The residents said while most of those terrorists were local tribesmen, they also recognised some non-local among them, including some Afghans and terrorists from Orakzai and Waziristan tribal regions.

Meanwhile, residents and traders in Bagh-Maidam Markaz, the Tirah valley’s main business centre, said that shops were open and vehicles regularly plied both local link roads and the main road between Bara and Tirah.

They also said that after the deployment of additional security personnel in the recent weeks, weapon-wielding terrorists, who were often seen roam across plains and film their patrols, had suddenly vanished.

Eight freed after militants take PAEC men hostage in Lakki​

LAKKI MARWAT: At least 17 private workers of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), along with their driver, were kidnapped by armed militants on Thursday while travelling along the Lakki-Darra Tang Road.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction and said that a rescue operation was immediately launched after the incident. “Eight workers have been recovered so far, including one who was injured,” the official said.

Another official said that there were three injured workers and that they had been shifted to the district headquarters hospital.

Sources said the private PAEC workers were on their way to a project site in the Qaboolkhel area of the district when their private coach was intercepted by armed assailants near Wanda Painda Khan.

The kidnappers took the hostages to an undisclosed location, later abandoning and setting fire to the coach in a forested area along the Kurram River.

Hours after the incident, videos purportedly showing the abducted workers surfaced on social media, with the workers appealing to the government to meet the militants’ demands to secure their release.

Soldier martyred in D.I. Khan

Meanwhile, a soldier was martyred and four others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack on a security forces’ post in the Garah Bakhtiar Morr area of Kulachi tehsil, Dera Ismail Khan district, sources said on Wednesday night.

Officials said that a convoy returning from Rorri was ambushed by armed assailants.

The attack resulted in the martyrdom of one soldier and injuries to four personnel.

Heavy contingents of police and security forces, along with medical teams, were dispatched to the site.

The area was cordoned off and a search operation was launched to apprehend the attackers.
