August 2, 2025

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Three police officials, who were abducted from Ladha and Servekai police stations on July 19, were successfully recovered late Friday night following a coordinated effort involving the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), police, security forces and Mehsud tribal elders.

According to District Police Officer (DPO) Upper South Waziristan Arshad Khan, the safe recovery of the officers was the outcome of effective collaboration and strategic coordination among all relevant institutions.

“Immediately after the incident, police, intelligence agencies, and the district administration were fully mobilised,” he added.

The recovered officials were promptly shifted to Ladha police lines for medical examination and debriefing.

The families of the recovered personnel expressed deep gratitude to DPO Arshad Khan and all security agencies.

“The timely and well-planned strategy by the DPO gave our loved ones a new life. We are sincerely thankful to him and his team,” they stated.

The incident took place on July 19, when the police officials were on a routine patrol and were ambushed and abducted by unidentified armed men, who moved them to an undisclosed location.

Funeral prayers were held Sunday morning for a police constable martyred in a terrorist attack on a checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, where an exchange of fire also left three terrorists dead and three policemen injured.

Over the past few months, multiple areas of KP — including Bannu, Peshawar, Karak, Lakki Marwat and Bajaur — have seen a series of attacks, particularly targeting police personnel in Bannu in July.

Bannu Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan said in a statement that three terrorists were killed and police constable Rooh Niaz Khan was martyred when 40 to 50 terrorists attacked the police check post in Fateh Khel, Bannu.

Three terrorists were killed and as many policemen were injured in the exchange of fire, which lasted more than an hour, the statement added.

Soon after receiving information about the attack on the post, RPO Khan and District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas Kulachi, along with the force, left for the site of the incident, Aamir Khan, spokesperson for the Bannu region police, told Dawn.com.

“The terrorists had blocked the roads leading to the post, but the police officials reopened the roads and fought with the terrorists,” RPO Khan said. “Police personnel bravely fought the terrorists, who used heavy weapons.”

He noted that the search operation for the miscreants was still underway.

According to a statement by the Bannu Police Office, funeral prayers for the martyred constable were offered on Sunday morning at Bannu Police Lines. In attendance were his relatives, RPO Khan, DPO Kulachi, and other police officers.

While speaking on the occassion, DPO Kulachi said: “Martyred police officer Rooh Niaz Khan sacrificed his life while fighting against anti-national elements, proving that Bannu Police is steadfast on every front.”

“We will never forget his sacrifice,” he said, adding that the bravery, sense of duty and sacrifice of the deceased are a beacon of light for everyone else.

DPO Kulachi emphasised that Bannu Police were fully capable of confronting terrorists on every front.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute to the martyred constable, saying he attained the highest level of martyrdom by sacrificing his life in line of duty.

“The police bravely fought the Indian-sponsored terrorists who attacked at night,” he said. Naqvi also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

On Thursday, at least six law enforcement personnel were injured in a quadcopter attack on Miryan police station in Bannu amid an ongoing operation against terrorists in the Nurar area, where KP police had foiled a terrorist attack bid earlier in the week.

However, a police official identified as Constable Hayatullah was martyred last month when terrorists attacked him in Bannu.

Earlier in July, three terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation in Bannu, while another died in an encounter with police in Malakand district.

Two cops hurt in quadcopter strike on Bannu police station

LAKKI MARWAT: Two policemen were injured in yet another quadcopter strike on the Miryan police station in Bannu district on Sunday.

A police official confirmed the aerial strike, saying that the wounded cops, Adnan and Ihsan, were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

“It appears that thermal cameras installed at the police station for security and surveillance purposes were the target of the attack as the quadcopter dropped explosives near them,” he claimed.

The official said the police opened fire but they could not hit the quadcopter due to its high speed and it disappeared towards the Ghora Bakkakhel area.

On Saturday, six security personnel, including two army soldiers and three CTD commandos, were injured in a quadcopter attack on the same police station amid an ongoing operation against terrorists.

The police station has come under several quadcopter attacks by terrorists during the last over one month.

Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy was killed and six others were injured when a car of a wedding party met an accident near Gandi Chowk on Bannu-DI Khan Road in Lakki Marwat on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Hamza, 15, a resident of Nasar Din Begukhel.

4 security personnel among 7 martyred in separate KP gun attacks

Four security personnel were among seven martyred in two separate incidents of firing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district and Peshawar city, officials said on Wednesday.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan, after the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

Four security personnel, including a driver, were martyred when unknown assailants attacked a Federal Constabulary (FC) vehicle in the Garagri area of Karak, which the chief minister and governor strongly condemned today.

KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur directed relevant authorities to arrest those involved in the incident as he expressed condolences to the families of those martyred.

“We salute the security personnel and their families who sacrificed their lives for the country and the nation,” said a statement from the office of KP CM’s press secretary.

Governor Faisal Kundi also condemned the attack, saying: “The sacrifice of those martyred in the war against terrorism will not go in vain.”

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, three people died in a gun attack on Peshawar’s Warsak Road, including police inspector Ali Hussain.

Peshawar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Masood Ahmed told Dawn.com that Hussain was travelling in a car with two friends last night when four assailants on two motorbikes opened fire on the car, killing all three.

“A pistol and submachine gun (SMG) were used in the attack,” he added.

“We are investigating the incident, and geofencing work is ongoing as well.”

Kundi condemned the “unfortunate and inhumane” incident as he expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

Last month, a police official was martyred in Karak while deployed at a police post in the Koh-i-Maidan area, which borders the Lakki Marwat and Mianwali districts. He embraced martyrdom while the assailants fled into the mountains.

Rocket fired at Scouts camp in Wana

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Panic gripped District Headquarters Wana on Tuesday when unidentified attackers fired a rocket targeting a Scouts camp.

According to police sources, the rocket was launched from the Doag area on the outskirts of the town and was aimed at targeting Lower Wana security camp.

Police officials said fortunately the rocket missed its intended target and landed in a seasonal stream (nullah) just outside the camp’s perimeter. There were no reports of casualties or property damage, though the explosion caused widespread fear and concern among local residents.

Police and security personnel reached the site after the incident and cordoned off the area.

An investigation was launched, with initial efforts focused on tracing the origin of the attack and identifying those responsible.

Law enforcement agencies are said to be collecting evidence from nearby locations and pursuing multiple lines of inquiry.

Police officials said that the motive behind such attacks is to destabilise the region and undermine public confidence in the government’s ability to maintain law and order.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far, and the authorities have yet to make any arrests.

2 killed, cops among 20 injured in blast in KP’s Wana

Two people were killed while 20 others were injured in a bomb blast targeting a police vehicle in the Wana tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower South Waziristan district on Thursday.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks, especially in KP and Balochistan, predominantly targeting the police, law enforcement agencies’ personnel, and security forces. Attacks increased after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke a ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022.

“The blast was caused by a remote-controlled explosive device planted near a police vehicle [in the Rustam Bazaar],” Deputy Superintendent of Police Imranullah was quoted as saying by the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Data from the incident report from the Wana District Headquarters Hospital showed two dead with 12 people with major injuries and eight with minor injuries.

A list of casualties issued by South Waziristan police spokesperson Anayat Khan identified two wounded policemen as Zubair Salaam Khan from the district’s Dabkot area and Fareedun Zubair from Birmal tehsil.

Lower South Waziristan’s District Police Officer (DPO) Tahir Khan had earlier told Dawn.com: “The wounded were immediately taken to the Wana District Headquarters Hospital.”

Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast and initiated a search operation to trace the perpetrators, DPO Khan added.

Investigation was also underway to determine the nature of the bomb used, the officer noted.

The incident follows residents’ complaints of the open display of firearms and the free movement of armed men in Wana’s Rustam Bazaar, an important commercial hub of Lower South Waziristan.

Sources said no one was allowed to roam Rustam Bazaar openly carrying weapons, and that strict measures would be implemented soon to curb the practice.

Pakistan witnessed a slight uptick in militant violence in July, according to a report released by the think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (Picss). KP, including its tribal districts, remained the epicentre of militancy, accounting for 53 of the 82 attacks recorded nationwide.

A day ago, a police constable was among two people injured when Upper South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Asmatullah Wazir’s vehicle came under attack in the district’s Ladha tehsil.

On Wednesday, four security personnel and a policeman were among seven people martyred in two separate firing incidents in KP’s Karak and Peshawar districts.

On Tuesday, unidentified attackers fired a rocket targeting a Scout camp in Wana. Although there were no reports of casualties or property damage, the explosion caused widespread fear and concern among residents.

Last Sunday, two militant commanders and the brother of a tribal elder were killed in a clash between the banned TTP (Gul Bahadar group) and family members of elder Malik Ashiq Noor in the Dana area of Lower South Waziristan’s Birmal tehsil.

Cop injured as late-night attack on Bannu police post repulsed

Separately, a cop was injured as police and civilians repulsed a late-night terrorist attack on the Khuni Khel police post in KP’s Bannu district.

“Police personnel responded strongly to the terrorist attack while showing bravery and determination,” Bannu DPO Saleem Abbas Kulachi said in a statement.

“A policeman got injured by the terrorists’ firing and was taken to a hospital,” the officer added, noting that residents also joined the police and took up positions against the attackers.

DPO Kulachi stressed that the residents’ courage further heightened the police’s courage. “The net around the terrorists is being tightened,” he asserted.

According to APP, the assault was carried out using both light and heavy weaponry by terrorists from the outlawed TTP and Tehreek-i-Jihad Afghanistan (TTG), operating under the combined name Al-Ittihad al-Mujahideen.

Over the past few months, multiple areas of KP — including Bannu, Peshawar, Karak, Lakki Marwat and Bajaur — have seen a series of attacks, particularly targeting police personnel in Bannu in July.

Last week, a fire exchange following a terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Bannu left a constable and three terrorists dead, while three cops were injured.

Bannu has also seen multiple quadcopter attacks over the past month, which the military says are carried out by the TTP.

Civilian killed, cop hurt as police, terrorists exchange fire in Swat

Our Correspondent

SWAT: A heavy exchange of fire broke out on Wednesday between terrorists, believed to be affiliated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, and the Swat police in the remote mountainous area of Dop Sar, located in Gwalerai region of Matta tehsil.

During the crossfire, a civilian, identified as Jahan Baha of Upper Dir district, was killed, while a constable, Sahibzada sustained critical injuries.

For several days leading up to the incident, residents of Gwalerai and surrounding villages had been raising concerns on social media regarding the unusual movement of armed men in the hills and even inside populated areas. Locals had warned of a possible terrorist presence and called for immediate action by the authorities.

In response to the mounting concerns, a large contingent of police was deployed to Dop Sar, as confirmed by Swat police spokesperson Moin Fayaz.

Regional Police Officer, Malakand, Sher Akbar also visited the area, conducted a thorough assessment of the situation and issued necessary directives to the officers and personnel on the ground.

Swat district police officer Mohammad Umar Khan accompanied him.

Speaking to media, RPO Sher Akbar stated that approximately 25 terrorists had infiltrated the Dop Sar mountainous region from the Dir border and were currently hiding in the forested area.

“We have over 7,000 policemen in Swat, fully equipped with state-of-the-art weapons. We are capable of tackling the terrorists without requiring army assistance. The police force has been mobilised to the area and remains on high alert to intercept and eliminate the threat,” he said.
