Distance View Of Tirich Mir, Chitral, 1991 (c).

With a height of 7,708 meters, Tirich Mir is the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush Range, the highest mountain outside the Himalayan Karakoram Range. It dominates the Chitral Valley as a blinding-white wall. It is still believed that the summit of the Tirich Mir is haunted by Demons and Fairies guarding the purest places beyond the polluting reach of mankind.

Bridge Leading to Mountain Pass, Chitral, 1905 (c).

There are few postcards from Chitral available at the turn of the century, a remote set of mountain valleys that figured in the explorations and struggles around the "Great Game" with Tzarist Russia in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

This British-ruled independent state had been the scene of a fierce struggle in 1895 when the British relieved a siege of their fort and installed a young ruler, Shuja ul-Mulk, who led the state until 1936.
