If you watch the program, it shows how carefully they orchestrated it to prevent innocent lives being killed or injured. They even carefully measured the quantity of explosives to prevent family members standing next to the target from getting injured. They took great care not to sell these devices to innocent people. Whenever possible, they only caused injury rather than death. This appeared like one of the most humane military operations. Like a surgeon removing a cancer tumor without removing a millimeter of excess healthy tissue. The overall killed was 30, which is far less than a typical suicide bombing in a school, mosque or hospital that happens, unfortunately, routinely.

The targeted 'people' were terrorists whose only goal was to kill as many Jews as possible, whoever they may be. Israelis didn't plant explosives in toasters or coffee machines. They carefully chose pagers and walkie-talkies used only by Hezbollah. Most ordinary people haven't seen a pager in over 20 years

While Panetta's words have wisdom, it is inarguable that the ceasefire in Lebanon occurred much faster and with fewer casualties than the one in Gaza. It might have also led to a bloodless revolution in Syria (and even prevented an escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel). If a war is inevitable, one should always prefer a war with fewer casualties and destruction.

Unfortunately, in human history, different groups of humans have moved around. I am keenly aware of that being in U.S.A. which is not where my ancestors lived. However, depending on that old history to wage modern warfare will naturally exact a survival response. That is what we are seeing as unusual and excessive use of force by Israel in reaction to October 7 attack.
