The Malaysian King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, became emotional when he told Chinese President Xi Jinping about his son who died in 2015 after battling liver cancer.

Sultan Ibrahim, who is in China on a four-day state visit that began on Sept 19, shed tears when he mentioned Tunku Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibrahim to Mr Xi during their meeting on Sept 20 at the Great Hall of The People.

The King expressed gratitude to China for assisting the late prince in undergoing a liver transplant at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in the southern province of Guangdong on Dec 10, 2014.

The fourth of six siblings, Tunku Abdul Jalil was battling stage four liver cancer.

Although the operation was successful, he eventually died a year later at the age of 25.

Both Mr Xi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was also present at the meeting, were “deeply moved”, reported Malaysia’s Chinese daily Sin Chew.

“They all felt Sultan Ibrahim was a father who loves his son very much,” Sin Chew quoted Malaysia’s Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming as saying.

Mr Nga, who is part of the Malaysian delegation, also revealed that Sultan Ibrahim told Mr Xi that his great-grandmother was from Guangdong and her name was Huang Yajiao.

“This means our King has Chinese ancestry,” Mr Nga said.

Upon hearing this, Mr Xi immediately instructed officials to go to Guangdong to trace Sultan Ibrahim’s family tree, he added.

National news agency Bernama reported that this is the first state visit by a Malaysian King to China in 10 years, marking a significant moment for both nations as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

During the meeting, Sultan Ibrahim commended China for its advancements, saying the country’s development has been impressive.

He also invited Mr Xi to visit Malaysia.

Almost all leaders of Southeast Asian leaders have Chinese ancestry.

Malaysia always favours strong partnership with China, says His Majesty

Saturday, 21 Sep 2024

BEIJING: Malaysia’s foreign policy has always favoured a strong partnership with China, says His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

His Majesty, who ascended the throne on Jan 31, is on his maiden state visit to China from Sept 19 to 22 at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

“Malaysia has gone through various governments, but I am here as the King of the country.

“Malaysia’s foreign policy has always been in favour of a strong partnership with China. Moving forward together is what we seek,” His Majesty said in his introduction to the meeting with Xi yesterday.

Sultan Ibrahim said China’s development had been impressive.

“Thank you for your visionary leadership, Mr President, and to the hardworking people of China,” said His Majesty.

Sultan Ibrahim also thanked the President and the government of China for graciously hosting him with generous hospitality and excellent arrangements in “this beautiful and great city”.

“I wish to extend my personal invitation to you, Mr President, to come and visit Malaysia,” said Sultan Ibrahim to Xi.

Earlier, His Majesty was accorded a state welcome at the Great Hall of the People.

This is the first state visit by a Malaysian King to China in 10 years, marking a significant moment for both nations as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

At the state welcoming ceremony, the national anthems of both countries were played, followed by a 21-gun salute.

Sultan Ibrahim, accompanied by Xi, then inspected a guard of honour.

The Great Hall of the People is an important venue in China for state affairs and diplomatic activities. Situated on the west of Tiananmen Square, it is the country’s political, economic, cultural and diplomatic centre.

Sultan Ibrahim arrived at the venue at 3.20pm.

His Majesty was accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zain and senior government officials.

His Majesty earlier granted an audience to Premier Li Qiang at the East Hall of the Great Hall of the People.

Sultan Ibrahim said that in 1974, history was made when Malaysia became the first Asean country to establish diplomatic ties with China.

“Tun Abdul Razak’s foresight laid a foundation for a lasting and fruitful friendship with bilateral ties flourishing across various domains over the past 50 years,” said His Majesty.

Tun Abdul Razak Hussein was the second prime minister of Malaysia from 1970 until his death in 1976.

Malaysia’s Ambassador to China Datuk Norman Muhamad recently said this first state visit in 10 years “could not have happened at a better time”.

“... indeed, it has been a long time. We are very pleased to have this visit. China warmly welcomes His Majesty’s visit,” he said as reported by Bernama.

“This visit was planned rather late. Normally with China, state visits involve discussions a year in advance but due to the close relations between Malaysia and China, when we proposed for His Majesty to visit China after his installation, we immediately received a positive response. We just needed to find a suitable time.

“This visit could not have happened at a better time as this year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Malaysia and China,” he added.

Sultan Ibrahim was installed as the 17th King of Malaysia on July 30.

His Majesty is scheduled to visit the Beijing Comac Aircraft Technology Research Centre today to observe the latest developments in China’s aviation technology.

Sultan Ibrahim is also scheduled to attend the naming ceremony of the Chair of Malay Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University in His Majesty’s honour and engage with the Malaysian diaspora during the visit.

Recently, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in Beijing that the country was committed to the China-Malaysia Community with a Shared Future aim.

Lin said the bond of friendship between China and Malaysia had been forged for a long time.

“Both countries are neighbours and partners who always support each other and enjoy mutually beneficial cooperation.

“In March last year, President Xi and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reached an important consensus on joint efforts to build a China-Malaysia shared destiny community, thus clarifying the direction of development of bilateral relations in a new era.

“This year marks the golden jubilee of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations as well as the Year of China-Malaysia Friendship.

“Prime Minister Li Qiang’s visit to Malaysia in June successfully injected new impetus into the relationship between the two countries,” said Lin as reported by Bernama.

There are still state endorsed discriminations against ethnic Chinese in Malaysia though.

The reasons Malaysia is still Kingdomship is because the independence is given by British and they dont revolt

While in Indonesia, there are still many Sultanate as well, but most of them still want to cooperate with Dutch like ML Sultanate

So the Revolution war is not done by our Sultanate, after independent, all of Indonesian Sultanate dont have power anymore, except in Jogyakarta province where Sultan family still control the Province and there is no local election there. It is because Sultanate in Jogya agree on revolution war and part of the revolutionary movement in 1945 - 1949

Well, I guess that is the problem. Malaysia in general is better run than Indonesia. Because the british do not destroy Malaysian society. Their society is largely intact. The british tended to govern their colony through their elite whereas the Dutch completely obliterated the Indonesian hierarchies. Malay and Indo societies are hierarchical

So come independence there are no native middle class in Indonesia to take over the government. You end up with Sukarno who has a chip on his block and didn't rise above himself. He led the country to disaster with his brand of socialism, uber nationalism of confiscating the private and Dutch property and kicking out all the Dutch from Indo resulting in hyperinflation, proliferation of state companies, and disastrous confrontation with Malaysia and Spore. ending up with a massacre.

I wish the Indonesian aristocrats partake in Indo politics but they are missing.

Now about independence contrary to popular belief, Indo is granted Independence because of the US decolonization drive after WWII.

China sponsors King Norodom Sihamoni and the queen mother while also maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Phnom Penh

We call this royal diplomacy.

Indonesia today is not the same as the past. They are moving in the right direction. Getting along with china seems to benefit them greatly and being neutral to United states and china does come with a benefit like that of Vietnam as long as they dont create an environment that's bad for Chinese interest then all is fine.

Over decades, Thai royal family has forged personal bonds with China’s leaders
Thai kings acknowledge their Chinese ancestry. Heck, even the founder of the Thai Chakri Dynasty is Chinese King Taksin. Most Thai aristocrats, politicians, and businesses are of Chinese origin, especially in the Bangkok area roughly 50%. of the population. the last 10 prime ministers including the present one are of Chinese ancestry.

So much so that one of the Thai foreign ministers once remarked when it comes to China we don't consider it a foreign country because Chinese roots are so deep in every corner of the society from the prime minster to the common man

Well Indonesia is lagging compared to their neighbors Their GDP per capita is so much lower than Malaysia or Thailand because of corruption and mismanagement of the country. Indonesia has potential, but they didn't reach their potential due to poor leadership. Poverty rate barely budge in the last 10 years etc

Malaysia also attracts lots of investment because of Chinese malays ties. They make up 22 percent of the country.

Yes, that is part of it. Indonesia discriminated against the Chinese and a lot of Chinese fled and brought with them their money and their talent to Spore and Other countries.

Sehat Sutardja the founder of Marvel Semiconductor just passed away at 62 RIP. He is Kanisius College alumni his coinventor is Jan Fabrianto, St Louis Alumni 2 of the best school in Indo. He wanted to build a plant in Indo but gave up because of red tape and instead built it in Singapore https://www.marvell.com/blogs/remembering-sehat-sutardja-marvell-co-founder.html

Remembering Sehat Sutardja, Marvell Co-founder

By Michael Kanellos, Head of Influencer Relations, Marvell
Marvell co-founder, Sehat Sutardja, was a visionary leader, brilliant engineer, and a cherished colleague and friend to many at Marvell.

Sehat’s journey began in Jakarta, Indonesia where he would build Van de Graaf generators and other devices with spare parts from his parents’ auto parts store. By 13, he was already a certified radio repair technician, showcasing his innate talent and curiosity. This early interest led him to pursue higher education in the United States, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, followed by a master’s and PhD in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Stephen Lewis, now a professor of electrical and computing engineering at UC Davis, described Sehat as a perfectionist in an article for IEEE Spectrum. As students, they were building analog-to-digital converters. The traditional way to make them involved using two capacitors, one twice the size as the other. “He figured out a way to do it with two identical capacitors, increasing the amplifier speed by increasing its feedback. We had a solution that worked, but he kept digging until he found a better way to do it.”

In 1995, Sehat, wife Weili Dai, and Sehat’s brother Pantas Sutardja founded Marvell Technology around a kitchen table. They chose the name Marvell because they wanted to build a company that could create ‘marvelous’ devices. The first product was a specialized read channel for hard drives that could be produced completely in silicon. Conventional wisdom was that the approach wouldn’t work, Sehat told students during a lecture at Berkeley in 2014. The device, however, reduced power consumption and production cost while elevating performance. Marvell soon became a trusted partner to many of the world’s leading technology companies.

As an inventor and co-inventor, Sehat held over 440 patents. He was recognized as the Inventor of the Year by the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association and named a Fellow of IEEE. He also received the Indonesian Diaspora Lifetime Achievement Award for Global Pioneering and Innovation and frequently spoke at events such as the International Solid State Circuits Conference about the future of semiconductor design and computing.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sehat was known for his humility, kindness, and generosity. He was a mentor to many, always willing to share his knowledge and insights. The Marvell team is grateful for his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind through his co-founding of our company.
