Microsoft Announces Major Downsizing - 60,000 Affected

I have been unemployed for 18+ months and mostly because I refuse to ever go back to in-office work. Money is not bad because I made good money and am frugal. Plus wife earns.
I can't imagine the indignity of hauling my stuff out of an office after getting fired.
I remember one particular layoff. Factory planner. Had been with Motorola literally since the day she graduated from HS. So easily 35+ years maybe closer to 40. Motorola was all she knew in her life.

That one was absolutely painful.

So, end of the day tomorrow, I will be watching for the press release of the earnings call. Microsoft will surely advise how many associates will be impacted by country.

It's only 4 countries and there will likely be a lot of unhappy folks in Seattle.

My brother in law (wife's brother) just turned 55. Is in bad health. He works at a major tire manufacturer plant. Long commute. They are not letting him go until coming February despite him pleading that his health is falling apart. The company says either he makes to February or lose the company provided health insurance $$. I offered to talk to his manager but he said they don't care.
February 2027 is not far off and a multibillion dollar tire company can afford to let go of a person like him who has been a good worker for them for nearly 3 decades but now his health is falling apart.
Oh, the BIL is also worried about the Ai impact but luckily for him, his innings is ending in work life.

I handed in my notice not to long ago. Given the nature of my position, I have a long notice period to work, but once done god-willing, I intend to live a life of freedom and work for myself on my terms.
Quite frankly, I've had enough of corporate life. It's a life of true slavery which limits the ability to live life as it's supposed to be lived. At the end of the day, you're just a number at work that can be replaced anytime.

I don't know about your circumstances. Kids or not. Money cushion or not. Debt or not. Health issues or not. But be careful making your choices considering all those factors. It looks like Ai is already having a real impact on careers. I had tailored my life to absorb the shocks--something which the guy in my profile pic said one should do. Therefore, I am not too worried but our circumstances are different.
Having said that, I am a true workaholic and not working for so long is boring to me. I am planning to embrace Ai in my field and make an impact and even try to make myself 'Future Proof'. Not necessarily for the money. But perhaps to prove myself to myself.

I wonder if other big tech companies will follow like facebook, google, youtube, instagram, amazon, ebay etc.

This will affect jobs in many countries

100% they will, many are doing these lay offs constantly on a smaller basis often by department.

Also the whole "come back to office" thing is also acting as layoff by stealth as they know many will quit

The rich billionaires will probably have even better profit margins having to pay less but the middle class takes the hit one again. GDP numbers will still look decent but the inequality grows

That is what I am saying, but AI stock if you can afford to invest

You are lucky to be able to say no. I am not sure I personally ever want a full remote role, but then each to their own :)..

But, my solution to "hauling my stuff out of the office" was to never leave anything in the office these days. I treat the work place as a temporary work place. The last time I left books, coffee mugs in the office was 2001, after than - I have run sterile clean in the office ! Some people find it strange to not personalise their workspace initially.

Even now, when I go to the office, I take my own keyboard(started to do this after covid), headset, chargers, computer mouse and coffee container in my back pack every day and bring it home every day... It is a ritual, but its clear in my mind.

I'd never do that but my respects to you!
