ISLAMABAD — Moscow will support Islamabad's bid to join the BRICS bloc of developing economies, the Russian deputy prime minister said on Wednesday while visiting the Pakistani capital.

Pakistan applied last year for membership in the alliance that has a stated aim to amplify the voice of major emerging economies to counterbalance the Western-led global order. Founded in 2006, it included Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2010. Recently, it expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.

Of course, we would be supportive” of Pakistan’s request to join the BRICS alliance, Alexei Overchuk said in a televised news conference, standing next to his counterpart Ishaq Dar, who is also the country’s Foreign Minister.

Dar and Overchuk said they also discussed ways to improve economic ties and bilateral trade that touched the $1 billion mark last year.

Also on Wednesday, Overchuk met with Pakistan's powerful army chief Gen. Asim Munir

In recent years, Pakistan has taken steps to boost commercial relations with Russia.

Pakistan’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan visited Moscow in February 2022 to meet with President Vladimir Putin when the Russian invasion of Ukraine seemed imminent. Since then, Pakistan has avoided condemnation of the Russian invasion, though it wants the resolution of the conflict through peace talks.

We don’t need to join every organisation of the world. There are too many of them. The leading organisations of NATO, Sco or even Brics are designed to protect interests of the big nations and Pakistan would not have a role to play besides being a partner to say Yes.

the best platform for Pakistan and India to work together was the SAARC which India destroyed due to unwillingness to share the table with Pakistan. I don’t know what will Pakistan get from BRICS that we can’t get already from being a member of existing organisations like the SCO

They can tick the box if they like but there is no real advantage of joining BRICS

Joining organisations what has it done for Pak, OIC, commonwealth, SOC, ECO, SAARC.

Pak needs to get its house in order then maybe they can benefit being part of an organisation. Right now they are like that member that no one wants to really work with because they are not offering anything useful back.

I don't see any harm in it, but at the moment at least I'm not sure what the benefits are

However it's making the west uneasy with so many nations joining, that on its own might be a incentive

Russian visitor is just massaging the host. Fact is Pakistan is not getting entry to BRICS anytime soon.

"All decisions are taken by BRICS member states in full consultation and consensus."

Is Afghanistan entering BRICS?

The point to note is,

America banned the companies alleged to be supplying parts to Pakistan

In the same week, Russia wants Pakistan to be part of BRICS.

The more America is pushing Pakistan away, the closer Russia wants to be with Pakistan
