At the Shahbagh intersection in the capital, a group claiming to be the "True July Warriors" attacked another group also identifying themselves as "July Warriors" who were blocking the road. As tensions escalated, the police intervened with baton charges and cleared both groups from the street. Later, traffic resumed through the Shahbagh intersection.
Earlier, on Thursday at 11 a.m., a group claiming to be “July Warriors” began a protest by blocking the Shahbagh intersection, which halted all types of vehicular movement in the area.
The demonstrators stayed through the night into Friday morning, laying down tarpaulins in the middle of the road and delivering speeches from a makeshift stage. They barricaded the surrounding roads. In the afternoon, clashes broke out between the two groups of July Warriors.
One side accused the protesters of being opportunistic conspirators. The other side alleged that pro-government agents attacked them to sabotage the movement. As both sides engaged in scuffles, police baton-charged and eventually cleared the main road, allowing traffic to resume.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division, said, “A group claiming to be July Warriors had blocked the Shahbagh intersection since Thursday morning. Despite repeated requests, they refused to move. On Friday evening, another group arrived with the same demands, and a scuffle broke out between the two sides. Fearing a major incident, the police dispersed both groups. The intersection was then fully reopened to traffic.”
Eyewitnesses reported that one group had occupied the Shahbagh intersection since Thursday under the banner of July Warriors. On Friday afternoon, when another faction opposing the blockade arrived, an argument ensued, followed by police intervention to prevent escalation by removing both sides from the area.
The faction opposing the blockade told journalists that genuine July Warriors would never disrupt public life by blocking roads. They claimed that people misusing the July Warrior identity were harassing the public and voiced their protest.
Though traffic was relatively light on Friday due to the weekend, the Shahbagh blockade still caused significant public suffering. Roads surrounding the intersection were barricaded. However, by Friday afternoon, nearby roads were reopened. Vehicles coming from Katabon could pass via the road in front of PG Hospital toward the InterContinental Hotel, and those from the InterContinental could go toward Matsya Bhaban via Shahbagh.
The demands of the protestors included:
Official recognition for July martyrs and July warriors;
Lifetime honor, healthcare, education, and welfare assurances for the families of martyrs and the injured;
Full responsibility of the state for the families of martyrs and the injured;
State coverage for all medical, rehabilitation, employment, and welfare costs of the injured;
Guaranteed lifetime dignified allowances for the families of the martyrs and the injured;
Establishment of special legal protections and support centers for these families;
International-standard trials for those responsible for the repression against the martyrs and injured;
Formation of an independent Truth and Justice Commission.
