Germany's transport minister throws support behind Tesla's FSD

Germany’s transportation minister voiced support for Tesla’s (TSLA) driver-assistance system as CEO Elon Musk seeks regulatory approval to expand the company’s self-driving technology across Europe.

ransport Minister Steffen Bilger is advocating for prompt EU approval after discussing technical and liability issues with Tesla executives and agreed that the self-driving system could only exceed the posted speed up to 10%. The “Mad Max” setting available in the U.S., which allows the vehicle to exceed the detected speed limit by as much as 50%, is excluded in the European version.

"My goal is for Tesla drivers to be able to enjoy the benefits of 'assisted driving' throughout the EU without delay," Bilger is reported to have said.

As part of the discussions, Tesla (TSLA) agreed to rename “full self-driving system” to “Tesla assisted driving” to address concerns that the prior description gave false assurances for a supervised system. EU regulators argue that the self-driving system should have guardrails in place to prevent vehicles from driving above the speed limit.

The European Union will vote late this year to approve autonomous use on European roads. A massive lobbying effort by Tesla (TSLA) to generate support for FSD across Europe has secured support from 8 member nations, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, while Sweden and France are among several EU countries that have yet to approve the technology.
