Batteries to autos: Chinese imports remain in top gear
Oct 19, 2026, 06:48 IST

NEW DELHI: Every cheer for electric vehiclesales in the country also means that importof batteries from China goes up too giventhe complete dominance India’s neighbourenjoys in the global trade of this product.

Not surprisingly, the spurt in the sale of EVsin India has resulted in import of batteriesfrom across the border nearly doubling to$2.9 billion during April-Aug, making it thesixth largest import item from China so far this year, the latest commerce departmentdata showed. The high growth has meant that it has overtaken electronic instruments, electric machinery, plastic raw materials and residual chemicals. With India and othercountries failing to make any technological breakthrough, import of batteries is only goingto surge. Indian battery makers, the few that have managed to set up shop after the PLI forthe sector failed, in any case, are just packing the cells imported from China.

Based! I must say.

Ola Electric is on a bumpy-ride again, as South Korea’s LG Energy Solution (LGES) has alleged Ola of gaining access to its proprietary pouch-type ternary lithium-ion battery manufacturing technology was leaked to the Indian EV maker.

According to news reports, a former LG researcher is under investigation by the National Intelligence Service, Seoul Metropolitan Police, and LG Energy Solution for allegedly transferring pouch-type ternary lithium-ion battery production processes and manufacturing know-how to Ola Electric. The researcher apparently admitted to transferring data but claimed he was unaware of its confidential nature.

An LG Energy Solution official confirmed that the company had identified the situation early and immediately alerted authorities.

God damn that's even more based. Apparently there was a South Korean former LG executive appointed in Ola. Who shared the trade secrets. 😂
