Haji Muhammad Ali founded "Kafe Student" in 1969 on Katrak Road in Karachi's Saddar area, near the Rainbow Centre and in the vicinity of well-known educational institutions like St. Peter's High School and St. Joseph Convent School.
At that time, his basic idea was to provide quality, home-cooked biryani to the students of nearby educational institutions at a reasonable price. Initially, the cafe was a small hut, with a bamboo roof and wooden pillars. His two elder sons also served in this cafe, which had a limited seating capacity. Daily, only one pot of biryani was cooked in a home-style manner, which was enough for about forty people.
Since there were several educational institutions around the cafe, the students themselves became its first and regular customers. This was the reason that this small business gained fame as "Kafe Student". Over time, with the addition of excellent flavors, quality food, and continuous hard work, this small business took a step towards growth, and this institution later became a famous food chain in Pakistan known as "Student Biryani".
Today, Student Biryani not only serves biryani, but also offers catering services for shami kebab, nihari, chicken burgers, chicken nuggets, karahi, rabbri, rasm malai and many other dishes. In addition, this institution also provides catering services for home, business and social events. Many people who head to the coastal areas of Karachi still consider buying a pot of Student Biryani on the way as their tradition. Its branches are also established in various countries including Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where hundreds of people are employed.
The life of Haji Muhammad Ali is a shining example of the fact that honesty, continuous hard work, not compromising on standards and commitment to one's goal can make even a small business achieve extraordinary success. His struggle is a message to the younger generation that no job is small or big; if a person continues to move towards his goal with determination, perseverance and dedication, one day his hard work will definitely pay off.
