PARSI EDUCATIONAL LEGACY OF KARACHI

The Parsi Zoroastrian community has played an important role in Karachi’s educational and civic history. Here are four institutions connected with that legacy:

B.V.S. Parsi High School — 1859
Established as Parsi Balakshala by Karachi’s Parsi community. Seth Shapurji Hormusji Soparivala later became a major benefactor.

Mama Parsi Girls’ Secondary School — 1918
Established on 1 April 1918 through the efforts of Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta and major Parsi benefactors.

NED Engineering College — 1921–23
Its origins date to 1921 as the Prince of Wales Engineering College. It was later named NED in memory of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, whose family provided major financial support.

Jamshed Memorial Montessori School — 1967
Founded by Gool K. Minwalla in Jamshed Memorial Hall. The hall itself was associated with the Karachi Theosophical Society and named in memory of Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta.

Together, these institutions reflect the Parsi Zoroastrian community’s enduring contribution to education, philanthropy and the development of Karachi.

A legacy that remains part of Karachi’s history.

The name of McLeod Road was given in honor of John McLeod, who was the Deputy Collector of Customs, and on 9 November 1969, the Karachi Municipal Corporation changed its name to I.I. Chandigarh Road. Chandigarh was briefly the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1957. This picture is from a few years before the name change. (Good Old Karachi) (Graana)

The story of this road began in the 1870s with cotton warehouses, cotton exchange, and a railway mill, then European banks and companies opened offices here. In 1935, McLeod Station was built, which is now called Karachi City Railway Station.

Today, it is home to the Pakistan Stock Exchange and the headquarters of major banks, and it is called "Pakistan's Wall Street."
