Old Man's Corners

1972 Lincoln Continental

The fifth and final car is a 1972 Lincoln Continental. It was used by Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush until it was pulled from service in 1987. Reagan was getting into the car on March 30, 1981, when he was shot by John Hinckley in Washington, DC, and the car carried him to the hospital.

1939 Lincoln

Next is the Sunshine Special, a 1939 Lincoln used by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was the first car built specifically for presidential use and got its nickname because Roosevelt enjoyed riding in it with the top down. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the car was fitted with armor and bullet-resistant tires and gas tank. It was in service until 1950 and also carried Harry S. Truman.

I have successfully managed over the course of a week to dispose of a grapefruit tree at the PHX-area house.

For context, every couple of years some blight, or blight combined with days on end of relentless 115+ degree heat, manages to kill some species of tree in the neighborhood. A few years ago, it was ash trees which are normally hardy. One other time, it was African Sumac, which for being an African plains tree, it should be hardy.

This year, it was grapefruit trees. And mine wasn't the only one. There are several other homes who had the same thing happen. And this was a mature tree; from time of planting in for 22 years with many a grapefruit produced. Shame to lose it.

Finished cutting it up today and was able to dispose of the balance in the garbage can. Only a short stump left behind. Will dig that out and who knows what will replace it. Since this house is for sale, may let that be the next owner's problem.

I can remember teachers and classmates, between classes, getting a smoke during breaks, in the smoking area.

Can also remember it was nothing seeing gun racks in pickups, in the highschool parking lot, during hunting season.

Remember a class in highschool where we had to teach others. My project was how to remove rust from an old lantern.

Went alphabetically. Tommy Dorsey was next.

He whipped out his switch blade and showed the class how to sharpen a knife.

About to go check and see if the game is on. Weather delay in Detroit so they are replaying the game from Sunday.

Detroit has the best farm system in the MLB. There are three minor leaders that need to join the team in 2026.

The rest need to be traded for legitimate major league starters.

His father comes in, every now and then, to the truck stop.

He knows I am a big Detroit Tigers fan

This is the minor league pitcher I am hoping will make the major league.

I was one of those with a gun rack. With a gun in it. And no one bothered the vehicles. There were too many of us.

In other good news, have some meetings coming up involving Medicare Part D. Insurance provider is canceling current plan which is a common theme. So now I need to find a new one.

Due to some upcoming other activities, will be unable to meet in person with my Medicare insurance specialist. So we'll be doing a Zoom meeting later in the month. Luckily for me, my circa-2016 Logitech Bluetooth headset WORKS with my personal laptop. Wasn't sure if it would or not given how MS is with device obsolescence. But it does.

I had to turn in the really nice Jabra external speaker/microphone. That was company issue. And it was nice. I do have a vendor-provided Polycom that was hit'n'miss with the Bluetooth functionality but it always worked fine with the USB connection. May test it as well to see it if works.

Yeah....you might say I'm too cheap to just go get a new one. Why? If the existing still works, keep using it.

I'm also going to test the Logitech headset on the Linux box. Want to do some Signal calls with a few people.
