She was really a nice girl. Very pretty too. I was extremely fond of her. About a year ago, my buddy found an OLD photo of the three of us. Like when I was 17, he was 18, and she was 16. Remembered the moment their parents took that photo.

Alas, because I was fond of her, didn't do the absorbing you might be thinking of.

She had a girlfriend who "got around". One of those that if you blew in her ear twice, by the time you finished the second one her panties would be off. Yeah, she was a wild child. Saw a photo of her on Facebook or Instagram about the same time a year ago. Had kind of a rough life. Got into drugs for a bit, then worked as a server in Las Vegas (likely a little more to that) and is now married to a Canadian living somewhere in Manitoba.

In a way, I feel sorry for her. I did like her. We went out a couple of times. She was popular of course for the reasons you suspect.

For a while in the 80s l had started listening to "New Wave" music. Joe Jackson etc

The 80's was an inclusive decade when it came to music. For some reason that decade allowed much older musicians to have success with 80's teen fans. Many of these bands and singers were famous for their 70's hits but managed to cross over the 80's and continue succeeding.

I can't stand new music my old a** doesn't allow me to be opened minded and give new music a shot but the 80's were different. My dad being a 60's teen was into music coming out of the early/mid 80's some being music my older sisters were into.

This is their only song I like by them and it's the E-guitar version of which a radio stationed made because the original version sucked so bad that people didn't listen. This version played on radios making them famous and this is the version I only knew of as a kid when our local "oldies" stationed played this song.
