Roller skating was a thing but for girls during early to mid 80s I can remember my older sisters roller skating on our driveway and sidewalk but it wasn't for me and my friends but we did go to skating rinks maybe 3 times a year those were fun.

Most guys I know never roller skated outside a rink. We were all ice hockey players since like 8 years old and so a roller skating rink was not intimidating. It was a great place to find new girlfriends as you'd grab struggling girls by the arm and teach them how to skate.

Plus falling on the wooden floors was nowhere near close to landing on the ice so you could fly around pretty quick without breaking anything if you rolled/tumbled out.
