Operation Hump. 1965. I know both the troopers in this photo. The one on the left had just turned 17 and about 3 months out of jump school at the time.

He died last year. Agent Orange.

The one on the right is former NYPD now retired and living in Florida.

This photo was included in a collection from the operation and published in LIFE Magazine.

This photo was taken a couple of days prior to Hump. White trooper is the one on the right in the photo above.

Black trooper is Cordell Spencer. He was KIA during an assault on an NVA machinegun position. Took 3 .51s to the chest.

Had a flat mate who was a marine. His name was Bobby Gorringe. Irish. His drill sergeant used to tell him "Gorringe you are a good soldier but you think too much ".

This thread is turning out to be great. Between it and the "Top 10 Songs" thread, y'all are learning not only a bit about me but what I experienced growing up as well as some history you might not have otherwise learned.

Girl who was a classmate of mine in middle and high school; her older brother was a Marine.

Killed in Vietnam.

A couple more fun facts:

Paul Harvey was living in Phoenix when he died.

Lee Marvin, yes, the actor, lived in Tucson in the Catalina Foothills. I had the opportunity to meet him. He used to get his haircuts at the same place I did.

His nose was always red like a clown nose. He did indeed like to drink. Died of cirrhosis of the liver.

Oh, and he wasn't very tall. Hollywood was able to make him look tall.

Paul McCartney (of the Beatles) also had a home in Tucson. No, I didn't get to meet him.

The Bonanno Crime Family also lived in Tucson. When my uncle was attending the University of Arizona, he dated one of the nieces.

Many years later, one of the guys who worked for me was also last name Bonanno. Yes, he too was raised in Tucson and was NOT a working member of the family. I asked him if he happened to know a <insert her name here> Bonanno. He looked at me funny and asked "how do you know her?"

Replied "my uncle dated her when they were at the UA". She was some cousin of his.
