One Warhead, Many Platforms: BAE Systems Launches BlackThorn

BAE Systems is moving toward a new class of battlefield payloads, releasing a family of multi-role warheads designed to deliver adaptable effects for emerging weapon systems.
Built around a modular architecture, BlackThorn is designed to merge blast, fragmentation, and anti-armor effects in a single platform.
It comes in three variants: 40 millimeters for lightweight applications, 70 millimeters for tactical multi-role missions, and 120 millimeters for enhanced effects.
The warhead supports integration with a wide range of autonomous platforms, including one-way effectors, counter-drone systems, missiles, and uncrewed ground vehicles.
“BlackThorn combines decades of expertise… to demonstrate a new way of thinking about payloads for a range of platforms that meet the demands of the modern battlefield,” said Scott Jamieson, managing director of BAE Systems’ Maritime and Land Defence Solutions.
What’s Next?
Estonian firm Frankenburg Technologies will be the first to integrate the new-generation BlackThorn warhead, pairing it with its Mark I short-range air defense missile.“Our collaboration with BAE Systems brings together advanced UK warhead technology and low-cost missile manufacturing to create a scalable interceptor capability,” said Dan Hallett, managing director of Frankenburg Technologies UK.
“Together, we are proving that effective air defense can be delivered quickly, at scale, and at a price point that enables mass deployment.”
Advancing Modern Warfare
BAE Systems said it used modeling, simulation, and digital engineering to accelerate BlackThorn’s development, followed by testing to validate performance.The company frames the platform as a response to demand for versatile munitions that can be adapted across multiple platforms rather than built separately for each one, with an emphasis on scalable, lower-cost manufacturing.
