Can you even do large scale military operations when the TTP doesn't occupy any areas unlike how they did in the past?

Anyway to me this sounds like a lollipop to international allies. It's a repackaged National Action Plan.

Basically, Azm-e-Istehkam is the new word salad for Raddul fasaad, which was supposed to be exactly what Azm-e-Istehkam is being described.

The new packaging however is an attempt to convince the Chinese that we are doing something. Instead, it spooked our own provincial govts and political parties and now clarification are being given that it's just new packaging. i wonder what the Chinese think of these theatrics.
I don't know how you can claim all that when even the defense minister is telling us that the framework of the operation will be clarified in a few days. One thing, however, is for sure and that's no migration/displacement of population will be needed this time. That's the single most important aspect of this operation from a layman's point of view.

Why don't we wait for a few days before labeling it an appeasement of our Chinese friends. This operation is needed in any case (with or without being an attempt to appease any one). No state can achieve peace for its populace without the writ of state and rule of law. We cannot allow gangs to lynch people, attack military installations, government offices, create no-go areas (including Kachchaa area in South Punjab), mobbing and killing people on concocted accusations while our judges and police force getting intimidated or compromised.

Admittedly we have all kinds of mafias active in the country that need to be smashed but these terrorists/anarchists probably pose the biggest threat that needs to be addressed with iron fist immediately. States don't negotiate with terrorists/anarchists. The only solution deal with fasadis is to kill them or they surrender to the state unconditionally.

BTW how this op is doing?
I bet that like all other failures (wheat, cricket, power, etc) this initiative is meant to doom. This incompetent setup cannot do even the primary job.

The Americans through brute force achieved their objectives in Afghanistan: Dismantling AQ's global network, killing bin Laden, and stuffing the pockets of American defence contractors.

I urge Pakistanis to stop indulging in this whatsapp-forward level of analysis.
Global network? I don’t think they had a global network but ok.

Bin Laden wasn’t killed due to brute force- it was CIA and someone snictched on Pakistani side.

Americans were also fighting Taliban and mujahideen and other fractions. Their goal was not to leave Afghanistan after negotiating with the people they called Terrorist.

It was getting expensive and solution was not in sight.

Clear action is needed against terrorist groups but without upending people’s lives

A new operation

Editorial
June 25, 2024

The twin battles against militancy and extremism will not be easy to fight but are essential for Pakistan.

SERIOUS concerns had been raised by opposition political parties — particularly those with presence in KP — after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the launch of Operation Azm-i-Istehkam on Saturday.

Considering that KP has been hit the hardest by terrorism, the concerns raised by these parties were understandable, as local communities were worried about fresh violence and displacement, similar to what was witnessed during earlier military campaigns.

Reacting to these concerns, the administration clarified matters on Monday when, in a statement released by the PM Office, it was pointed out that no large-scale displacement will take place, and the envisaged operation will largely be a ‘mopping up’ exercise to clear out the “remnants” of militant groups.

There can be little doubt about the need to crush the terrorist threat before it gains further strength. It is a fact that militant actors have regrouped after nearly every previous military operation. Thus, to make Azm-i-Istehkam a success, the lacunae of past operations must be studied minutely.

The new operation also seems to be partly influenced by vocal Chinese concerns about the need for security in Pakistan. Whatever the triggers, clear deterrent action is needed against terrorist groups, but without upending the lives of people in the affected areas, and causing mass displacement.

The state seems to have realised the need for this balance, as reflected in Monday’s PMO statement. The government should continue to take all stakeholders on board, as without feedback from all political forces, it will be difficult to convince the affected populations of the operation’s necessity. True, operational details cannot be divulged; but, if need be, sensitive information can be shared with lawmakers in camera.

Moreover, Pakistan has been losing an unacceptably high number of security men to terrorist attacks over the past few years. The latest attack came last week in Kurram, in which five troops were martyred. This is not a conventional war, and the military needs to consider forming specialised units trained to counter the asymmetric measures employed by militant groups. In the cities, it is the police, through the CT departments, that should be leading the fight against terrorist groups.

The state must also continue to communicate to the Afghan Taliban the need to prevent their soil from being used against Pakistan, and to rein in the TTP. This pressure needs to continue along with CT operations on Pakistani soil. And, as the military takes on the militants on the battlefield, a complementary effort against extremism will also be required.

As witnessed in the aftermath of earlier military campaigns, unless the support structure of terrorist groups in the country is completely dismantled, these entities can spring up with new names. The twin battles against militancy and extremism will not be easy to fight, but are essential for Pakistan.

Don't waste time announcing operations

It's stupid.
It's just worthless propaganda

Just enforce laws
Fund and increase police and security
Increase funding for operations and crack down on illegals and non citizens

Continue IBOs and and increase them

Increase fencing and continue to target enemies in other countries

Radicalisation is defined as the process by which people come to support terrorism and extremism and, in some cases, to then participate in terrorist groups. There is no obvious profile of a person likely to become involved in extremism or a single indicator of when a person might move to adopt violence in support of extremist ideas.

The process of radicalisation is different for every individual and can take place over an extended period or within a very short time frame.

Individuals may be susceptible to recruitment into violent extremism by radicalisers.

Violent extremists often use a persuasive rationale and charismatic individuals to attract people to their cause. The aim is to attract people to their reasoning, inspire new recruits, embed their extreme views & persuade vulnerable individuals of the legitimacy.

This can put a young person or adult at risk of being drawn into criminal activity and has the potential to cause significant harm. Children, young people, and adults may become vulnerable to exposure to or involvement with groups or individuals

Following full-throated criticism from opposition parties, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday clarified that the planned counterterrorism campaign ‘Vision Azm-i-Istehkam’ would entail intensifying ongoing intelligence-based operations (IBOs) rather than a “new and organised” military offensive.

The clarification comes after the PM’s Office (PMO) last night stated that the campaign, earlier announced as ‘Operation Azm-i-Istehkam’, would not be a kinetic large-scale military operation, nor would it entail the mass displacement of the local population.

Operation Zalzala (2008)

Operation Zalzala, also carried out in 2008, aimed at dismantling TTP strongholds in South Waziristan. This mission was instrumental in reducing the operational capabilities of the TTP and restoring relative stability to the affected areas.

Operation SherDil (2008)

)Operation SherDil took place in 2008 in the Bajaur Agency against the TTP. The operation was successful in significantly weakening the TTP's presence and influence, leading to a phase of relative stability in the region.

Operation Rah-e-Rast (2009)

Operation Rah-e-Rast was launched in 2009, once again targeting TTP militants in the Swat Valley. This operation continued the efforts to stabilize the region, resulting in a sustained period of relative stability.
