Officials from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China are meeting on Wednesday in the Chinese city of Urumqi under the trilateral mechanism, said a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Since Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan on February 26, diplomatic contact between the two sides had largely ceased.

The MoFA official, who asked not to be named due to the sensitive nature of negotiations, said the meeting is not a “mediation effort per se”.

The meeting is focused on sharing perspectives on the latest escalation. No major outcomes are expected, though China is pushing for confidence-building measures, such as reopening trade routes.

Officials are engaged in detailed discussions on the evolving regional situation, balancing security concerns with economic priorities.

Diplomatic sources, while sharing an update on talks, said Pakistan reiterated its concerns over the presence of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) sanctuaries inside Afghanistan.

Afghan Taliban representatives, while signalling a willingness to address these concerns, continue to maintain that TTP actions inside Pakistan do not fall under their direct responsibility.

Despite these continuing differences, talks are also focusing on confidence-building measures and lowering of tensions. Pakistan is understood to be showing openness towards reopening trade routes and economic cooperation with Afghanistan.

It is an effort to manage tensions while leveraging opportunities for economic cooperation, even as core security disagreements persist, a Pakistani official said.

Recent Pak-Afghan ties

There has been a resurgence in terrorism in Pakistan since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021.

Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban administration to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries on Afghan soil, particularly those linked to the banned TTP. Officials say those appeals have gone unheeded.

Operation Ghazab lil-Haq was launched on the night of February 26, following unprovoked firing by the Afghan Taliban from across the border.

From March 18 to 23, Pakistan observed a five-day temporary pause in the operation on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, with the FO later saying it would continue “until its objectives are achieved”.

De-escalation requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye were part of the reasons behind the pauses announced by both sides, according to their respective statements.

Another Pakistani official, familiar with the development, said Beijing requested Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who was in the Chinese capital on Tuesday, for Islamabad’s participation as Kabul had asked for assistance from the Chinese in bringing Islamabad to the table.

He added that China also has concerns about the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) — a transnational terrorist outfit known to operate in Afghanistan.

Mixed signals from Pakistan.

They should have taken out BLA and TTP leaders and then done talks.

I don't understand why they are still alive.

What are you guys doing? Worried about a bit of collateral? Who gives a shit about their human shields. If it means cratering an entire building then so be it.

We saw the decline in Terrorists attacks in Pakistan once this Operation begins, without taking out leaders and more Damage to TTP/TTA, we will be giving them time to regroup and rearm. Remember we have trust these snakes too many times, you can bring Allah SWT as mediator but these Afghans will back stab us and him too, Afghans won't stop fighting unless they claim territory inside Pakistan, even if the TTP is gone they will use the political wing of TTP, PTM and PTI to continue to cause trouble. I'd say keep hitting them hard, and create a no man/Buffer zone, no build-up in that area, Mine and monitor that via drones.

When we started to showcase our ability to take over the Wakhan corridor the TTA want talks, this is very similar to closing the strait.

A real tangible cost should be inflicted on the afghans, I say we take it over and then the negotiations would be about whether we allow afghans to come there and use it or not. This corridor would have to be under Pakistani control.

If Taliban are being offered open trade then this is a lost cause not only did you waste your own money by bombing a few ammunition caches, you are handing to them the one economic leverage you have, in written !!!... WTF is wrong with our mediators? You will give them the trade and once they stock up during the summer they will again be ready to take you on during the winter... The TAPI gas pipe line is also not at our advantage as India is going through immense domestic pressure due to lack of gas... Once you give them this they will make more mess on our western border to try and take more control back...

I constantly said that at the start of this war that, taking out dozens of check posts will not create a big difference but rather was mostly used for domestic consumption. What they should have done was taking out HVT's and leaders of BLA, TTP or any other anti-Pakistan factions operating inside Afghanistan. Without doing that all of this was just collateral which will be rebuilt eventually. Surely the economic and logistical costs impacts are huge on the Afghans but the terror masterminds and networks are still out there breathing. Either the Pakistan intelligence hadn't/couldn't do enough to track those HVT's or the military actually showed restraint for unknown reasons.

The Afghando keera in the minds of Pakistanis (including the weak officials) still remains alive and strong. They have acknowledged a threat exists there, but they still don't realise the nature or extreme of that threat intertwined with the Afghan state foundations.

This is why they take 2 steps forward and then 5 steps backwards, thinking they have solved something far more deep than they know.

If they don't know where they are in Afghanistan then that means ISI have not been doing their jobs in the last 20 years.

The ideology of the Afghan Taliban:

Got arm twisted into allowing millions of Afghans into Pakistan in the 80s.

The countries encouraging them knew what they were doing.

They let Pakistan take in all the Afghans and then in the 90s designated them an enemy and implicated Pakistan along with them and down the drain Pakistan went along with its economy and social fabric.

Lahore couldn't even celebrate a f**king kite festival this year without Afghans losing their minds and attacking half the country and capital.

Atleast they booted out that idiot IK who was about to give all the afghan refugees Pakistani citizenship. The only sensible decision they have made so far.
