Pakistan has not permanently stopped its operations in Afghanistan, but rather engaged in a temporary, conditional pause, followed by a resumption of military activity as of late March 2026. The operations, officially described as intelligence-based actions targeting the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and joint setups with the Afghan Taliban, have been marked by intense escalation and sporadic pauses.
Key reasons for the temporary pauses and the overall challenging nature of these operations include:
  • Temporary Truce for Eid and International Requests: Pakistan officially paused Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq from March 18/19 to March 23/24, 2026. This pause was timed to align with the Eid al-Fitr holiday and was announced in response to requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey.
  • Intense International Scrutiny: A Pakistani airstrike in late February 2026 was reported by Afghan officials to have caused high civilian casualties in Kabul, which drew widespread international condemnation. This incident increased pressure on both sides to de-escalate, at least temporarily.
  • Unverified Claims and Counter-Claims: Both sides have disputed the accuracy of strikes and casualties. While Pakistan has maintained it only targets terrorist infrastructure, Afghanistan has accused it of attacking civilians, complicating the military situation.
  • A Need for Regional Stability: With ongoing regional crises, including tensions surrounding Iran, there was pressure to avoid a full-scale, long-term war, prompting diplomatic initiatives by countries like China.
  • Ongoing Demands for Action: Despite the pauses, Pakistan has vowed that its operations will continue until the Afghan Taliban takes concrete, verifiable actions to deny sanctuary to the TTP, which Pakistan holds responsible for increased terror attacks on its soil.
As of late March 2026, Pakistan stated that the pause had ended and that military action was continuing until its security objectives were met.

The Khyber Pass is a 53-kilometer (33-miles) passage through the Hindu Kush. It connects the northern frontier of what is now Pakistan with Afghanistan.

During the three Afghan Wars the pass was the scene of numerous skirmishes between Anglo-Indian soldiers and local tribesmen who tried to control access to it. See less
