Taliban have a lot of US equipment and are certainly battle hardened. But the Pakistani military is no joke and has a lot of very competent elements. The Taliban would likely not fare well in such a battle beyond an escalation of aimless terror attacks.
Hope the situation remains calm and can be resolved peacefully.
It won't be resolved peacefully.
Basically, a tribal region known as Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was a semi-autonomous region within Pakistan since the creation of Pakistan on 14 August 1947.
For-years it became to be known as a "no go area" where all criminal elements could escape to and the Pakistani authorities could not intervene.
Pakistan becomes a nuclear power in 1998.
US is attacked in September 2001. Pakistan supports the US invasion of Afghanistan. Pakistan needs to show to the world that it's nuclear program is safe and won't fall in terrorist hands.
In April 2002, Pakistan tries to secure the FATA region that borders Afghanistan and the Pakistani military is met with such ferocious firepower in FATA that Pakistani military was completely taken by surprise. The military was also ill prepared for this type of warfare.
Pakistan agrees to station American UCAVs at Pakistan's secret Shamsi Air Base and hundreds of drone strikes are launched along with thousands of Pakistani military operations between June 2004 and July 2018.
In 2007, all the different militant groups join hands and become Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or the Pakistani Taliban.
By 2018, most of the FATA region is cleansed of the militants. Some escape to Afghanistan where many are captured and prisoned.
Pakistan finishes fencing the entire border with Afghanistan in 2017 and FATA is finally annexed after 71-years in 2018 and merged with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
In August 2021, Afghan Taliban return to power and release all the prisoners. These included TTP militants. They restart their campaign to reverse the annexation of FATA and this is where we are today.
Some blame the resurgence on Cartoon-e-Azam Imran Khan because he has a soft spot for the TTP while others blame the military for failing to stop the resurgence and others blame both the Cartoon and the military.
