NEW YORK: New York City has no shortage of places to eat, but every once in a while, a restaurant makes you feel as though you have stepped into a familiar corner of home, thousands of miles away.

That was my experience at Nishaan, a Pakistani-American restaurant in Manhattan’s East Village, where the food, the crowd and even the walls seemed to tell a story about what it means to be Pakistani in America.

Located at 160 First Avenue, Nishaan has built its identity around an irresistible idea: what happens when the flavours of Pakistani street food meet the sandwiches and comfort foods that define New York? The answer is a menu that feels playful without losing sight of its roots.

Its Pakistani chopped cheese has become a signature, while the restaurant’s founder, Zeeshan Bakhrani, told Eater New York that his approach grew out of his experience of being both Pakistani and American, and his desire to bring the two food cultures together, thoughtfully.

That philosophy comes through in the menu. Rather than simply placing a traditional kebab inside a sandwich, Nishaan reimagines the familiar flavours and textures of Pakistani food through dishes that feel distinctly New York.

I tried the chapli kebab chopped cheese, the Buffalo tandoori chicken sandwich and the elotes chaat. Each offered a different take on the restaurant’s central concept: taking something recognisable and giving it a Pakistani twist.

The chapli kebab chopped cheese was especially fitting for a city where the chopped cheese has become a food institution. Pakistani spices bring depth to the minced meat, while melted American and pepper jack cheeses, peppers, onions, lime-cilantro sauce and tamarind chutney create a combination of richness, heat and tang. It is a meeting of culinary traditions that feels natural rather than forced.

The Buffalo tandoori chicken sandwich takes another familiar American favourite and gives it a desi personality, marrying the punch of Buffalo-style chicken with tandoori seasoning and cooling mint-chutney ranch.

The elotes chaat, meanwhile, brings together the spirit of Mexican street corn and South Asian chaat, layering contrasting textures and tangy flavours into a dish that feels perfectly at home on this inventive menu.

There is plenty more to explore, from the Pakistani achari cheesesteak and Pakistani-flavoured wings to the smash burger and gulab jamun. Even the drinks have personality. I also tried the Thai chai with cold foam, a fun, indulgent addition to a meal already full of bold flavours.

That recognition matters because Pakistani cuisine is often introduced to international audiences through a relatively narrow selection of familiar dishes.

Restaurants such as Nishaan broaden that picture by showing how the flavours people grew up with can evolve without losing their character.

What stayed with me most was the sense that Nishaan was doing more than serving an inventive meal. It was creating a space where Pakistani identity could be expressed with confidence, humour and creativity.

Its food speaks to people who recognise the flavours of home, but it also gives diners unfamiliar with Pakistani cuisine an accessible way to discover them.

For Pakistanis living abroad, a restaurant like this can offer a little nostalgia alongside something entirely new.

For New Yorkers, it is another reminder that the city's food culture is shaped by the people who bring their histories, memories and appetites to it.

In a city defined by its endless appetite for reinvention, Nishaan makes a compelling case for Pakistani flavours to have a place at the table.

And judging by the crowd waiting for a seat, plenty of people are happy to pull up a chair.
