As a father of two students, I can say with certainty: the most important subjects in Chinese schools now are mathematics, followed by Chinese, and is English. Then come physics, chemistry, biology, history, and so on.

English should ne optional in Chinese schools as in many countries of the world, certainly not the same weight as mathematics and Chinese in China. It's mostly useless to the majority and China doesn't want to be colonized. There are Russian, French, German, Spanish and Arabic that should be in the similar category as English since now US is in rapid decline.
