"Short Range Air Defense" is a very broad concept. You need to specify which type of system is similar before I can answer your question.

The HQ-17AE is characterized as a field-based, accompanying air defense missile system. It can fire directly while accompanying armored units on the move, without needing to stop.

Other systems include combined gun and missile air defense systems, laser defense systems, etc.

The HQ-17AE is characterized as a field-based, accompanying air defense missile system. It can fire directly while accompanying armored units on the move, without needing to stop.

Other systems include combined gun and missile air defense systems, laser defense systems, etc.

IE capable of engaging wide variety of threats from supersonic missiles to drones, single vehicle Gun+missile systems like the FK-3000 are primarily point defense systems geared towards CUAS rather then the more general purpose systems like the HQ-17.

HQ-11 though not exactly the same. HQ-17 like Tor has everything on a single mobile chassis which makes it suitable for supporting ground troops while HQ-11 operates as batteries consisting of multiple TELs, search and command vehs.

For static defence, HQ-11 would be a better option i'd say.

Yes the HQ-11 that's what I was thinking of, I suspect this HQ-17 might be a Army purchase.

HQ-17 and Tor aren't SARH but use command-guidance, the missile itself has no seeker, it's guided by radio commands/datalink by the radar. Pantsir also uses command-guidance.

What alternatives do you have in mind for the role and do you have the matching budget? - the problem is we are building up our AD literally from the scratch and we ain't have the luxury of keep adding most expensive stuff on the cart and add to each layer of AD - so its important to see the overall picture.

We are buying 16FEs - another HQ9BE as well i think - some radars to augment our AGDE and other EW stuff - few shorad options for small drones from Turkey as well - and some other projects in pipline too.

So i don't see it as a bad choice for point defences - baki let's see.

Also a single vehicle only carries 8 missiles so being able to engage 4 targets simultaneously isn't really a limitation considering you'd be using 2 missiles per target.

The threat we face is quite unique too, such a massive number of supersonic missiles, just any Shorad system won't do, we need quick agile fire and forget missiles like the IRIS-T SLM to deal with such a threat, is it worth cheaping out on a certain kind of system and potentially lose much more?
