To be fair, most of them were ghost soldiers. The rest were a mix of opium addicts, bacha baaz freaks, psycho warlords, rabid ethnonats, and some genuine folks. It was bound to go poof. This is the main factor! 300,000 afghan army vanished over night as Taliban were such a overwhelming and unopposed force in Afghanistan.
Our strategy needs to understand this. We just can't waste our ammo against a country of unlimited recruits. We need military + intelligence + diplomatic solution.
Intelligence solutions can find innovative ways and not only finding the top enemy leaderships. For-example, they can create a diversion and can even make Iran-Afghanistan border hot. Make them busy elsewhere.
OR if we want full scale hot border then we need to fix our finances and then we can keep bombing Kabul and hope that Taliban will bow down against our firepower.
