THINK TANK: CONSULTANT
That's added weight to a soldier's already heavy load.Is it? Here is a possible cheap substitute. Most Trail Cameras have very decent night vision capabilities "lighting up " the area using motion sensor triggered infra-red lighting and recording the images in total darkness, Trail cameras are cheap ( from $70-$200) and can be wired for live feeds or coupled to Occulus type head sets . The same electronics modules that go into Trail cams can be used to develop a substitute for NVG coupled to an occulus type headset . Not high quality over longer distances but enough to catch platoon level attacks by terrorists across the border at 500-600 meters.
Low quality.. but as Stalin famously said : Quantity has a quality of its own.
Nugs are purposely built to be small and light as possible, so they're easy to carry, and don't get in the way.
