Why is India spending $35 billion on a 4.5 gen aircraft?

Isn't that amount of money sufficient to launch a joint fifth gen fighter program with France? (I think Turkiye and South Korea did it with much less).

It's just nuts if not stupid!

I mean Pakistan is aiming to induct a fifth gen aircraft in the near future, and India will focus on a 4.5 gen aircraft instead?

Is the indian air force trying to confuse the Pakistani Air Force with their stupidity or something? 🤔

in all the war gaming or scenario exercises it seems a high number of 4.5 gen can equalize a small number of 5 gen fighters. India it seems, is buying time to build its own 5th gen fighter with critical technologies from Rafael, all critical components including engines and avionics. This will accelerate the design and induction to less than 10 years. other offers like F35 and su57 are causing various Indian heartburns

Hi,

For all practical reasons---the KAAN is not a fifth gen aircraft.

It would be in between 4.5 gen to 4.99

My Trukiye brethren would really want it to be a 5th gen---it maybe awhile getting there.

You are not the only smart guy in this universe.

Turkey has already flown Kaan and far far ahead of Indian effort towards AMCA.

But, Turkey is still buying Eurofighter. Are they stupid? Or they have free cash lying around or Kaan isn’t good enough?

There is no fifth Gen fighter available to India at this time. Even if available the cost to buy and maintain them would be prohibitive.

We still need numbers of a decent platform. Rafale is going to be that number.

I don't understand this psyops, though most of such posts are from Indian accounts.
There is a whole 3rd tier defence “analysis” ecosystem feeding off of rumors, wild speculations mixed with recycled information, flexing on X or YouTube to grab audience.

If the F-35 can be classified as a 5th generation platform, so can the Kaan purely by stealth shaping.

The only real difference between the F22 and Kaan is the rear engine stealth shaping of the exhaust nozzles interms of stealth.

Is the J20 5th Generation to you ? Is the J-35 5th Generation?

Is it a systems gap? Is it an EW gap? Please clarify why you think it is not a 5th generation platform ?

Hi.

The PAF might very well procure it.

It will end up as a wonderful work horse for the agency.

If the PAF can turn the F6 aircraft into an extremely potent aircraft---if will do wonders with the KAAN.

The mindset of the PAF to find success from average aircraft under extreme duress is an achievement that hardly any other air force in the world has claimed of---and the KAAN is not designed to be an average aircraft.

The aircrafts at the very end of life have become the spearhead of strike force with the latest weapon systems---.

So---what do you say to these abilities---capabilities--- " THE PAKISTANI AIR FORCE INGENUITY "---the leves of which you donot see in anywhere in any other air focre.

There is NO CHANCE that France will transfer critical technologies such as engine manufacturing knowhow. That is a pipe-dream. Local assembly, yes, local manufacturing - NO!

People may not be understanding how strategic the turbofan engine technology and metallurgy is to the powers that dominate this space. Its essentially 5 nations (US, Russia, France, UK and China) that retain this monopoly and they are in no mood to give this away for billions when they make trillions on it.
