Statecraft With Geeta Mohan: Is Pakistan Building A New Security Network Through Somalia?

Pakistan is making a striking new strategic move — and this time, the focus is Somalia. Islamabad signed a defence cooperation agreement with Mogadishu on August 4, covering counter-terrorism, military training, military exchanges and capability building. Just three days later, Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, raising questions about whether the Somalia deal is part of a much larger geopolitical strategy. Why does Somalia matter to Pakistan? The answer lies in geography. Somalia sits at the intersection of the Gulf, the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean — a strategically crucial maritime zone where Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE are all expanding their influence.Pakistan brings counter-insurgency experience, military training and an affordable defence industry. There are also reports of Somali interest in Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter jets, reportedly with Saudi and Turkish support, although no confirmed contract has emerged. The bigger question is whether Islamabad is trying to turn Somalia into a gateway for greater influence across the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Is Pakistan simply helping Somalia rebuild its military — or is Islamabad building a new strategic frontier?

Everything is clearly symbiotic within the Mecca agreement.

Turkey is the main player over here and along with it Pakistan operates

This also aligns with Saudi who can check UAE influence

Above this all is china

India reluctantly is being dragged along by Israel and UAE, the expansion is not the issue, the risk premium raised with other nations is.

USA sees no beneficial exchange in aggregate with India hence rationally they pursue other constructs

I was not aware of any Pakistani defense pact with Somalia. Is this confirmed or just usual nonsense from Indian media ?

Here it is
Hmm. This East Africa/North Africa region is full of conflicts with many different players, from Somalia all the way upto Libya. Yet there has been little to no discussion of Pakistan getting involved here. It's actually quite a sensitive region now.

I think Pakistan is following Turkiye footstep. From Somalia to syria.

The stakes are getting higher in that region. The importance was already known...Djibouti has had US base, China base...and Iran vying for influence via Yemen's Houthis. Israel and UAE courting Somaliland...while the opposition is vying for influence with Somalia...
...the whole idea is having control of that water way(Bab-al-Mandab). These countries in the vicinity offer the same leverage over that water way like the one Iran/Oman have on the strait of Hormuz.

It has increased even more in importance because not only u can indirectly exert control on Suez canal(North of that) by being able to control who enters and exits but also because this route increasingly became the back up route after the closure of strait of Hormuz.

In my opinion, both Pakistan and Türkiye—the two largest Muslim militaries—have decided to form a large Muslim alliance. It would be headquartered in Saudi Arabia and gradually bring in countries across the region, particularly those surrounding Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia would gain an automatic security umbrella, with the alliance’s strategic and military arrangements centred around it.

Türkiye would expand its influence across West Asia and North Africa.

Pakistan, meanwhile, can shift its concept of strategic depth away from Afghanistan and towards other willing partners.

I think the whole point of securing Bab al-Mandab from the Houthi terrorists is to ensure that maritime traffic can continue flowing freely, which in turn helps keep the Suez Canal open and functioning normally.

That's all good and fun during peacetime...but when that ends, whosoever can control this route would hold considerable leverage against their rivals(as we just saw in case of strait of Hormuz).
...I was just telling the other poster about the significance of this route(and why Somalia is being brought into this geopolitical game).
