پاکستان اور کینیڈا نے تجارت، سرمایہ کاری، توانائی اور دیگر شعبوں میں تعاون بڑھانے پر زور دیا ہے۔ وزیراعظم شہباز شریف نے پاکستان کی امن کوششوں کی حمایت پر کینیڈا کا شکریہ ادا کیا۔

اس موقع پر وزیراعظم شہباز شریف نے کہا کہ دونوں ممالک کے درمیان دوستانہ تعلقات قائم ہیں، تجارت، سرمایہ کاری، توانائی اور دیگرشعبوں میں تعاون کو وسعت دینے کی ضرورت ہے۔

وزیراعظم نے کینیڈا کے وزیراعظم مارک کارنی کیلئے نیک خواہشات کا پیغام پہنچایا اور کہا کہ جلد وزیراعظم مارک کارنی سے ملاقات کا منتظر ہوں۔

وزیراعظم شہباز شریف نے خطے میں امن کی کوششوں کیلئے پاکستان کی حمایت پر کینیڈا کا شکریہ ادا کیا جبکہ کینیڈا کی وزیرخارجہ انیتا آنند نے اسلام آباد میں استقبال پر وزیراعظم کا شکریہ ادا کیا۔

انھوں نے زراعت، معدنیات اور توانائی میں نئے مواقع تلاش کرنے کی خواہش کا اظہار کیا۔ انیتا آنند نے کہا کہ فارن انویسٹمنٹ پروموشن پروٹیکشن معاہدہ کینیڈین سرمایہ کاروں کے اعتماد کیلئے اہم ہے۔

اس موقع پر دونوں رہنماؤں نے تجارت اور معدنیات کے شعبوں میں وفود کے تبادلے پر بھی اتفاق کیا۔

وزیراعظم نے کینیڈا سے کینولا درآمد کے حوالے سے پروٹوکول پر دستخط کی تقریب کا مشاہدہ کیا۔ پروٹوکول پر نائب وزیراعظم اسحاق ڈار اور کینیڈا کی وزیر خارجہ انیتا آنند نے دستخط کیے۔

ISLAMABAD: Canada and Pakistan on Monday agreed to inject fresh momentum into their bilateral relationship by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, security, defence and development, as Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, during the first bilateral visit by a Canadian foreign minister to Pakistan in nearly two decades, held a series of high-level meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

The visit culminated in commitments to accelerate negotiations on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), broaden cooperation in key economic sectors, deepen security collaboration and launch new development and law enforcement initiatives.

PM, Canadian FM discuss expanding economic partnership

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day, called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister's House after holding one-on-one talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Anita conveyed the good wishes of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and said her visit had been undertaken on the instructions of her prime minister to further strengthen Canada's relations with Pakistan.

She expressed Ottawa's desire to explore new opportunities for trade and bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of agriculture, mining, energy, automobile and auto parts, while emphasizing Canada's interest in expanding economic engagement with Pakistan.

The Canadian foreign minister also said the proposed Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA) would help strengthen the confidence of Canadian investors and encourage greater investment in Pakistan.

Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan and Canada enjoyed longstanding friendly relations that should now be expanded into stronger economic and investment partnerships.

"The two countries enjoyed friendly ties that needed to be further expanded, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, agriculture, including agri-foods and vaccine manufacturing, renewable energy, as well as the automobile and auto parts industry," the prime minister said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz conveyed his greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Mark Carney and expressed his desire to meet him in the near future. He also recalled his telephone conversation with the Canadian premier in April and thanked Canada for supporting Pakistan's efforts to promote regional peace.

The two sides agreed that the Pakistani-Canadian community continued to serve as an important bridge between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties.

According to the PMO statement, both countries also agreed to exchange delegations in the fields of trade and minerals cooperation to explore mutually beneficial opportunities and further enhance bilateral trade and investment.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also witnessed the signing of a protocol on phytosanitary regulations governing the import of Canadian canola into Pakistan, which was signed by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

Pakistan, Canada pledge stronger defence, security ties

The Canadian foreign minister also called on Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, regional security and bilateral relations between Pakistan and Canada.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir highlighted Pakistan's perspective on global peace and regional stability, underscoring the importance of cooperation and collaborative efforts to address common security challenges.

The visiting Canadian foreign minister appreciated Pakistan's continued sacrifices and contributions in the fight against terrorism and acknowledged the country's constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Both sides reiterated their resolve to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand engagements in the fields of defence and security.

Canada announces new investment in security, development

Earlier, addressing a joint media briefing with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar after their high-level talks, Anita Anand announced that Canada would invest more than $2.2 million in three new security initiatives with Pakistan and launch $45 million in new development assistance programmes.

She described Pakistan as an important partner in Canada's strategy to diversify global trade, noting that Ottawa intended to double its non-US trade over the next decade.

"Canada is pursuing a trade diversification strategy, and we will double non-US trade over the next 10 years," she said. "Pakistan is an important country in terms of our trade diversification strategy."

Anita said the two countries, which this year marked 80 years of diplomatic relations, had agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and economic development.

"We are committed to expanding trade and investment through a new Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, known as a FIPA, to be completed at the earliest possible date," she said, adding that the agreement would provide businesses in both countries with greater predictability and confidence to invest and expand.

On regional issues, the Canadian foreign minister acknowledged Pakistan's diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, particularly its role in supporting dialogue aimed at achieving a peaceful and sustainable resolution of regional tensions, including those involving Iran.

She said Canada remained concerned over escalating tensions across the Middle East and Gulf region and expressed concern over attacks on civilian infrastructure, including power generation and water desalination facilities, urging all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians and pursue dialogue.

Anita announced that Canada's more than $2.2 million investment in three new security initiatives would be implemented through Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The initiatives, she said, would strengthen cooperation in border management, counter-terrorism, financial crime investigations and specialised law enforcement training.

"Pakistan is an important partner for Canada in South Asia and beyond," Anita said. "We've seen this in the talks that Pakistan has hosted during various phases of the Iran war."

On trade, she thanked Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar for facilitating greater access for Canadian agricultural exports, noting that Pakistan had imported more than 470,000 tonnes of Canadian canola over the past year.

"We appreciate this continued cooperation," she said, adding that Canada hoped to see more Pakistani products—including rice, textiles and sporting goods—on Canadian retail shelves.

The Canadian foreign minister also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in clean energy and mining, pointing to the 240-megawatt Dabeji hybrid wind and solar project, being developed by Canadian company JCM Power in partnership with Karachi Electric, as well as Barrick Gold's investment in the Reko Diq mining project.

She further announced $45 million in fresh Canadian development assistance for Pakistan, saying the funding would help communities adapt to climate change, strengthen disaster resilience, expand access to education—particularly for girls—improve reproductive health services and support recovery from devastating floods.

"From development cooperation to security collaboration to expanded trade and investment, Canada and Pakistan have meaningful opportunities to strengthen our relationship for the benefit of both of our peoples," she said.

'Work to do together' amid changing global order

Earlier, during the opening session of talks at the Foreign Office, Anita said Pakistan and Canada had "work to do together" in light of a rapidly changing international environment.

She described her visit as a renewed effort to strengthen bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

"We have more work to do together to ensure that, across sectors in our respective economies, from agriculture to agri-food to manufacturing and beyond, there is a strong bilateral relationship," she said.

Referring to broader geopolitical and economic developments, she added: "In light of the shifting international order and the rewiring of the global economic regime, we have work to do together."

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the Canadian delegation, noting that he and Anita Anand had remained in close contact over the past year through meetings in New York, Kuala Lumpur and Davos, in addition to several telephone conversations.

"I think that shows our active diplomacy with each other," Dar remarked.

Describing Anita's visit as the first by a Canadian foreign minister to Pakistan in almost two decades, Dar said the long gap underscored the need for more frequent bilateral engagement both in the two capitals and at multilateral forums.

"I think we have the capacity and the possibility of raising our bilateral relations in terms of trade, in terms of investment, in terms of defence, security. There is a huge scope," he said.

Dar said Pakistan attached great importance to its longstanding relationship with Canada, describing it as one founded on mutual respect, democratic values, vibrant people-to-people contacts and constructive bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

He also described Canada's large Pakistani diaspora as one of the strongest pillars of bilateral relations.

"We hope today's discussion will translate our renewed momentum, which we started last year, into concrete outcomes, providing clear direction for advancing our bilateral relationship," he added.

Anita noted that Canada was home to around 300,000 Canadians of Pakistani origin and reaffirmed Ottawa's commitment to building upon the momentum generated in recent months.

"I look forward today to exchanging on the progress that we have made to date, and I also look forward to the further deepening of ties between Canada and Pakistan," she said.

Following the talks, the Foreign Office described Anita Anand's visit as an important milestone in Pakistan-Canada relations, saying it reflected the resolve of both countries to further strengthen bilateral engagement and expand cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors.

The Foreign Office said the discussions covered the full spectrum of Pakistan-Canada bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) also highlighted the strong people-to-people ties underpinning bilateral relations, noting that more than 300,000 Canadians of Pakistani origin live in Canada, while approximately 20,000 Canadians reside in Pakistan.

According to GAC, Canada-Pakistan bilateral merchandise trade reached approximately $1.2 billion in 2025, including $499.7 million in Canadian exports to Pakistan—up 65 per cent since 2024—and $696 million in imports from Pakistan.

It also noted that the second round of negotiations on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement was held in June 2026, adding that Canada continued to pursue broad cooperation with Pakistan in trade and investment, climate resilience, energy security, critical minerals, governance, democracy, development cooperation, regional security, defence, counter-terrorism and anti-crime capacity building.

KARACHI: Pakistan and Canada have agreed to increase bilateral trade in agriculture, canola, pulses, soybeans, rice, spices and fruits.

New phytosanitary protocol for Canadian canola import was signed.

The Foreign Office said that Pakistan and Canada agreed to promote trade and investment in the mineral sector.

Canada announced its continued support through the United Nations and Interpol for Pakistan's counter-terrorism efforts.

According to the spokesperson, Canada also announced cooperation for development projects in the fields of education, climate change and health in Pakistan.

Pakistan and Canada agreed to continue high-level contacts and conduct an annual review of bilateral cooperation.
