Given the historical grievances between the KMT and the CCP, I can understand why friends in Mainland China hold a negative view of the KMT.
However, the vast majority of what Taiwan has achieved today was built on the foundation laid during the KMT’s rule.
This includes major infrastructure projects that helped Taiwan’s economy take off, the semiconductor industry that developed later, and the National Health Insurance system, among other things.
I do not expect friends in Mainland China to reverse their negative impression of the KMT, but when comparing the KMT and the DPP, the KMT’s achievements in governance are far superior to those of the DPP.
Today, the KMT is actually facing a dilemma in many ways. If the KMT wants to unseat the DPP, it must win more votes, which requires the support of centrist voters.
Therefore, the KMT cannot appear too pro-China, as that would drive away centrist voters. As a result, the KMT often finds its hands tied and is unable to take a clear stance on many issues.
Anyway, the outcome of the CCP-KMT rivalry is already clear. I just hope that, as time goes by, the two sides across the Taiwan Strait can achieve peaceful reunification...
