Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that he will be compelled to take “controversial path” for the passage of the 26th constitutional amendment if the opposition parties refused to support his efforts to pass the judicial package with consensus.

"I myself making last attempt to convince the opposition parties to vote for the constitutional amendment in a non-controversial way," he said while addressing a rally in Hyderabad held to mark the 17th anniversary of Karsaz incident.

The PPP chief said if he failed to evolve consensus on the proposed constitutional amendment “then we all have to pray for the country’s democracy”.

"If the opposition still refuses to support us despite so many compromises then I will be compelled to pass the amendment with the support of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the extra members," the PPP chief said.

He added that he will have to pass the 26th constitutional amendment in parliament via "brute majority" with the support of extra members if opposition refused to evolve consensus on the draft.

“It is necessary for us to establish a forum for the equal representation of all provinces but if the opposition shuts the door on us so then I will be compelled to take the 'controversial path,' which is not my favourite path and I tried not to take it, along with my allies to form constitutional bench at the federal and provincial level,” he added.

The next 5 days will decide if Pakistan will have a "independent " judiciary system or a "subservient " judiciary system rubber-stamping every thing the establishment wants to continue this illegal setup which doesn't have the support of the people of Pakistan.

Cabinet approves constitutional amendments draft to present in parliament today​

The federal cabinet on Sunday approved the proposed draft of the 26th constitutional amendment after seeking consensus from the government’s coalition parties, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The Constitutional Package is legislation proposing a set of constitutional amendments, including the extension of the chief justice’s term. A special parliamentary committee formed last month — which has the representation of all parties, including the PTI — has been discussing various proposals.

Following the approval, the ruling coalition is set to present the draft of the judicial reform package in both houses of the parliament today.

Prior to the National Assembly and Senate sessions, a cabinet meeting was held in Islamabad today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

“The federal cabinet has approved the proposed draft of the 26th constitutional amendment of the government and its coalition parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party,” the statement from PMO said.

PTI boycotts NA sessions​

Meanwhile, the PTI, according to a statement released by its media cell, said that the party’s political committee has decided to boycott the voting process in both houses of the parliament, in case the government tabled the constitutional amendments today.

PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari, in a conversation with Dawn.com, said that the party will attend both sessions of the parliament today, but will not vote for the amendment.

“The party will abstain from voting and record their protest while sitting in the parliament”, Bukhari said.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Gohar Khan told Dawn.com separately that the party will meet JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman today to discuss the matter.

A day prior, the party had held a meeting with Fazl as per PTI founder Imran Khan’s instructions.

According to Fazl, he had received a “positive response” from Imran regarding the constitutional amendment.

Thanking Imran for his “positive response”, the Maulana said it was through him that the PTI and its leadership were kept informed about the developments with regard to the constitutional amendment package. He had expressed the hope that PTI would come up with its reply on Sunday.

Govt claims numbers complete​

Ministers of the federal government claimed yesterday that it had the required number of lawmakers to pass the much-touted 26th constitutional amendment.

Recounting the various political meetings occurring in the past few days, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said: “Despite the numbers and homework being complete, the attempt was made not to stop the consultation process and achieve broader consensus because when a constitutional amendment takes place, it is our obligation to not only bring all political parties onboard but have a fruitful debate on every clause to take it to a logical conclusion.”

“As [PPP Chairman] Bilawal [Bhutto-Zardari] said yesterday. We have other options present but we are democratic-minded people and it is our effort to move forward on this matter after a complete consensus.”

Similarly, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also maintained that the government was pursuing a broad consensus on the constitutional package in both houses of parliament despite the government’s numbers being “pretty much complete”.
