Pakistan’s Babar Azam made history during the second T20I against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday, breaking a long-standing record held by Chris Gayle.

Former captain, who was demoted to number three in the batting order, scored 31 runs off 20 balls. His performance on the day led him to surpass Gayle’s record to become the fastest player to reach 11,000 T20 runs (combined international, franchise, and domestic cricket).

Babar’s innings brought him to the milestone in just 298 innings, breaking Gayle’s previous record of 314 innings. With this feat, Babar became the 11th player in history to score 11,000 runs in the shortest format of the game, and only the second Pakistani after Shoaib Malik.

Babar also held the record for the quickest to 7,000, 9,000, and 10,000 runs in T20 cricket as well. Overall, Babar has 11,020 runs in 298 T20 innings at an average of 43.38 and a strike rate of 129.35 with 11 centuries.

Fastest Players to 11,000 T20 Runs (by innings):

  2. Chris Gayle - 314 innings
  3. David Warner - 330 innings

  5. Aaron Finch - 363 innings
In addition to this T20 record, Babar also reached another significant milestone in his career as he became the fifth Pakistani batter to surpass 14,000 runs in international cricket.

The other players in this exclusive club are Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Javed Miandad.

After Imad, veteran pacer Amir announces retirement from international cricket

Fast bowler Mohammad Amir has announced his retirement from international cricket, a day after white-ball spinning all-rounder Imad Wasim quit the game, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Saturday.

The pair, who took back their retirement from the game this year, were selected for the ICC T20 World Cup in summer where the Green Team were knocked out in their earliest-ever elimination after a sub-par performance.

According to a press release issued by the PCB today, the 32-year-old pacer began his international career in June 2009, featuring in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is.

“Amir took 271 international wickets and had scored 1,179 runs across the three formats,” the PCB said.

Amir, who was an integral part of the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC winning squad, said it was an honour to play for the country across all three formats, the statement added.

The veteran pacer had previously announced his retirement in 2020, saying he was being “mentally tortured” by the PCB management.

Pakistan’s performance in T20 Internationals (T20Is) in 2024 has reached a concerning milestone, with the national team suffering 16 defeats in 27 matches.
This places Pakistan in a joint position with Rwanda, which also endured 16 losses but in 24 matches, for the most T20I defeats of the year.
This statistic highlights the ongoing struggles within Pakistan’s T20I team, which has faced inconsistent performances and a lack of cohesion throughout the year.
Despite Pakistan's cricketing legacy, the team has struggled to establish a winning combination, suffering defeats against both top-tier teams and lower-ranked nations alike.
In addition to Pakistan and Rwanda, Bhutan and Indonesia also had difficult years in the T20 format. Bhutan recorded 15 losses in just 19 matches, while Indonesia, like Pakistan, played 27 matches but lost 15 times.

The alarming number of losses is expected to lead to changes in team management and squad selection in the near future.

Pakistan and India on Thursday reached a breakthrough in the impasse between the neighbours on the venue for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy “with a hybrid model”, ESPNcricinfo reported on Thursday.

The tournament, scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, has become embroiled in a dispute, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refusing to send its team to Pakistan, citing political and security concerns, despite assurances from all member boards regarding the security arrangements and the tentative match schedule.

Earlier in the month, BCCI representatives turned down the PCB’s proposal of adopting a “partnership formula” for the next three years as part of efforts to break the ongoing deadlock between the two parties.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the model would see India playing their matches for the tournament at a neutral venue. In turn, Pakistan’s matches scheduled to take place in India for ICC events until 2027 will also be held at a neutral venue.

Jokes on India. Neutral is what we do best.

Jokes aside, Pakistan's preference for neutral venue now should be ----> Bangladesh. Although, I think it would be either Sri Lanka or Dubai.
