Privatisation Commission board recommends Fauji Fertiliser’s inclusion in consortium that won PIA auction​

ISLAMABAD: The Privatisation Commission board on Tuesday recommended the inclusion of the Faiji Fertiliser Company (FCC) in the Arif Habib-led consortium that won the auction for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Last December, the consortium had successfully bid Rs135 billion for a 75 per cent stake in the national flag carrier. The FFC was initially among the bidders but had withdrawn from the process ahead of the auction. It had later joined the winning consortium on December 25.

It should be mentioned that the Privatisation Commission board’s recommendation has now paved the way for the consortium to buy the remaining 25pc stake in PIA for the consortium to take full control of the flag carrier.

On Tuesday, the Privatisation Commission held a meeting, which was chaired by the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatisation, Muhammad Ali.

According to a press release, in accordance with the terms of the share purchase and subscription agreement, the FFC was nominated by the consortium, with Arif Habib Corporation Limited serving as the lead member.

The commission board, after due review, endorsed the nomination and confirmed that FFC fulfilled the applicable eligibility and regulatory requirements, the press release added.

However, the statement said that the proposed inclusion of FFC in the consortium was subject to approval by the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation and the federal cabinet, as required under the applicable framework.

The Arif Habib-led consortium includes Fatima Fertiliser (34.1pc), Fauji Fertiliser (33.9pc), Lake City (16pc), and the City School with AKD (Aqeel Karim Dhedhi) Group (16pc).

The meeting was informed that about 2,500 acres of land would be required for the establishment of a new airport for Peshawar and for this purpose, it is necessary to select a safe and suitable location away from the population.

The participants of the meeting agreed that due to the presence of the existing Peshawar Airport, the city is facing problems of traffic, security and increasing population, therefore, the relocation of the airport is very necessary in the current circumstances.

The meeting considered various possible locations for the establishment of the new airport, including Mathani, Azakhel, Surizai, Mamo Khatki, Naaguman and Bara Akakhel.

After a detailed review of these locations, recommendations for selecting the most suitable location will soon be submitted to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi and Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Syed Shahab Ali Shah.

Addressing the meeting, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud directed the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar to form a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) to select a suitable location for the new airport.

The committee will include officers of the Revenue Department, Pakistan Airports Authority officials and other experts who will conduct a detailed survey of various locations and complete the initial homework and formulate their recommendations.

It was decided in the meeting that another meeting would be held after three weeks to review the progress made in this regard and the implementation of the decisions.

The officers participating in the meeting termed this important project as very important in the context of the development of the region, urban facilities and security and stressed on taking coordinated and fruitful steps in this regard.

The Commissioner Peshawar Division said that the initial homework should be completed soon so that it can be shared with the higher authorities for approval.
