KARACHI: A Pakistani real estate development company said on Wednesday it had completed requirements to enter the bidding process for a stake in the country’s flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), scheduled for later this week.

The cash-strapped Pakistan government, which is looking to privatise the loss-making airline, said earlier this month six companies had been shortlisted as potential bidders.

But only one company met a Tuesday deadline to submit “earnest money” prior to final bidding, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing a Privatisation Commission official.

Chairman of Blue World City, Saad Nazir, confirmed to Reuters in a text message that his company is the only one to enter the final bidding process, declining to disclose the earnest money it had submitted.

The privatisation ministry did not immediately reply to request for comment outside business hours.

Islamabad has previously said it was putting on the block a stake of between 51% and 100% in the debt-ridden airline as part of reforms urged by the International Monetary Fund.

Blue World City, a real estate developer, has a consortium that includes Blue World Aviation and IRIS Communication Limited.

Nazir said the group is also looking into acquiring operations of the Islamabad International Airport which the government is looking to outsource.

The group is in talks with global aircraft manufacturers and airport operators, including Chinese and Turkish companies, he said.

The Pakistan government received one bid out of a total of six groups for a stake in the national carrier – Pakistan International Airlines – as other consortiums stayed away from one of the country’s major privatisation attempts, reported Bloomberg on Tuesday.

The bidder deposited “earnest money” for the transaction with the nation’s Privatisation Commission by Tuesday’s deadline, Ahsan Ishaq, spokesman for the Privatisation Ministry, was quoted as saying in the report.

Ishaq did not disclose the name of the interested party, the report added.

A total of six groups had been shortlisted to bid for shares in PIA including Airblue Ltd., Arif Habib Corporation Ltd., Air Arabia’s Fly Jinnah, Y.B. Holdings Pvt., Pak Ethanol Pvt. and real estate consortium Blue World City.

The much-anticipated bidding process for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) officially commenced today, with Blue World City Consortium emerging as the only participant.

The consortium, led by Chairman Saad Nazir, submitted their bid during a ceremony held at a hotel in Islamabad.

The bidding comes after the government received approval from the Privatization Commission Board regarding the reserve price.

The media will witness the bid opening at 6:30 PM today, with the expectation that if the bid exceeds the reserve price, it will be deemed successful and forwarded to the federal cabinet for final approval.

PIA's financial landscape reveals assets worth approximately PKR 152 billion, including aircraft and operational routes.

The airline has around 7,100 employees, with over 2,400 working on a daily wage basis. In an effort to stabilize the workforce post-privatization, Blue World City plans to retain employees for 18 months and may offer re-employment to around 70% thereafter.

PIA privatisation: Blue World City submits bid of Rs10bn, way below PC’s expectation of Rs85.03bn

Blue World City submitted a bid of Rs10 billion for a stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), way below the Privatisation Commission’s expectation of Rs85.03 billion, putting the entire process of the national flag carrier’s privatisation in jeopardy.

The real estate development company has now been given 30 minutes to meet the PC criteria.

Earlier, the bidding process for the privatisation of flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) got under way at the Serena Hotel on Thursday with the Privatisation Commission confirming to Business Recorder that one bidder – consortium of real estate group Blue World City – submitted the lone bid.

The bids were to be submitted at 1:30pm. Other groups stayed away from depositing the ‘earnest money’, and hence, were also not eligible to submit a bid.

The lone bid was unveiled at around 6:35pm, and Blue World City made an offer of Rs10 billion for the stake in PIA.

Blue World City refused to match the minimum expectation of the Privatisation Commission of Rs85.03 billion and stuck to its original offer of Rs10 billion for a stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), ending the bidding process of the national flag carrier’s privatisation.
