Diplomatic efforts falter
Amid the escalating violence, Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni is due in Islamabad today to engage with Pakistani officials who previously mediated a now-collapsed interim ceasefire, reports suggested.
Earlier, Tehran had announced it is suspending its commitments under the so-called Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, accusing the US of violating the framework.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said the country’s focus was now on defending itself. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that repeated US actions had damaged trust in American commitments, saying Washington would face “unforgettable lessons” if it continued its campaign.
Iranian military officials also warned of further retaliation and said the country would maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.

Iran's interior minister arrives in Islamabad for high-level talks

Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Islamabad on Monday on an official visit, leading a high-level delegation for talks with Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership amid evolving regional developments.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi received his Iranian counterpart at Islamabad International Airport, where Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry presented a bouquet to the visiting minister.
Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam was also present on the occasion.
Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Naqvi described Momeni as “my brother” and said he hoped the Iranian minister had brought “good news.” He expressed confidence that the visit would strengthen bilateral ties and hoped it would also lead to progress on regional issues.

Background
The visit comes amid heightened regional diplomacy, with Pakistan continuing efforts to facilitate dialogue aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States.Earlier on Monday, a Pakistani interior ministry source told AFP that Momeni would hold talks with Pakistani officials during his visit, although no official confirmation was given on whether the trip was directly linked to Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
Pakistan last week reiterated its commitment to encouraging all sides to halt hostilities and resume negotiations under a memorandum of understanding it helped broker last month.
Iran has also indicated that diplomatic contacts with the United States through mediators remain ongoing despite recent military tensions.
Momeni has previously participated in mediation-related discussions and hosted Mohsin Naqvi during the Pakistani minister’s visit to Iran.

Pakistan, Iran reaffirm resolve to expand bilateral trade to $10bn

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran on Tuesday reiterated their resolve to expand bilateral trade to $10 billion, with Commerce Minister Jam calling for transforming “historic brotherly relations” with Iran into a robust economic partnership.
Since March this year, both countries have rolled out a series of measures to facilitate border trade, including easing customs procedures, formalising Taftan as a customs station, and notifying new transit routes, against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran conflict in the Middle East that has strained economies in the region and beyond.
Their latest engagement took place at the 10th session of the Pak–Iran Joint Trade Committee (JTC), which is being held in Islamabad from August 3-5. The meeting was co‑chaired by Iranian Industry, Mine and Trade Minister Mohammad Atabak and Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan.
On the occasion, Khan also underscored the urgency to finalise the Pak–Iran Free Trade Agreement, a statement issued by his ministry said.
He called for the removal of barriers in border logistics and cargo movement, highlighting that joint border markets and electronic data interchange could significantly boost trade flows, it added.
According to the statement, both sides reviewed the measures already taken to enhance bilateral commerce at the meeting.

Tuesday’s meeting takes place around two weeks after Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni’s visit to Islamabad, where he also held a meeting with Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi. During that meeting, the two sides agreed to expand railway cooperation and strengthen cross-border connectivity.
They also discussed the revival of the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) freight train service and measures to enhance regional connectivity, the statement said.
As maritime trade faces uncertainty due to the Gulf crisis, Pakistan also permitted exporters in March this year to continue shipping food and pharmaceutical products to Iran via land routes without mandatory banking instruments.
Simultaneously, Islamabad allowed rice exports to Central Asian Republics and Azerbaijan through Iran. In total, 10 food items — including rice, seafood, potatoes, meat, onions, maize, citrus fruits, bananas, tomatoes, and frozen chicken — along with two non‑food items (pharmaceuticals and tents) were cleared for land‑route exports without financial instruments.
To strengthen border management and formalise cross‑border flows, Pakistan established the same month a new customs station at Jeerak in Panjgur district, designated as the fifth crossing point for trade and transit with Iran. The facility aims to regulate passenger movement, document personal baggage, and channel informal trade into the formal economy.

In April, Pakistan’s commerce ministry had notified six transit routes for the transportation of goods to Iran via Pakistani sea ports in Gwadar and Karachi.

Pakistan to host Iranian officials as Trump’s patience wears thin

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday invited Iran’s parliament speaker and foreign minister for urgent consultations on regional developments, as Tehran described Islamabad as its primary mediator with the US.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq invited Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator with Washington and speaker of parliament. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, meanwhile, invited his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. The invitations were delivered in Tehran late Monday night after Dar spoke with Araghchi.
“They exchanged views on regional and international developments, including the deteriorating situation in Occupied East Jerusalem,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
