Calls stress dialogue as Trump warns of ‘very tough’ action if no Iran deal

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate telephone conversations with the foreign ministers of Turkey and Iran on Wednesday, as tensions simmer over Iran’s nuclear programme.

In a call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the two leaders discussed regional and international developments and matters of mutual interest. They agreed to maintain close coordination on shared priorities.

The calls came a day after US President Donald Trump told Israel’s Channel 12 that the United States would have to do “something very tough” if a deal is not reached with Iran.

“Either we reach a deal or we’ll have to do something very tough,” the broadcaster quoted Trump as saying.

Trump has said he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, Axios and Channel 12 reported, amid tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and its recent crackdown on protesters.

So far, Iran has rejected expanding the scope of its talks with the US beyond the nuclear issue. Washington, however, wants Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for regional militant groups included in the negotiations.

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, in a meeting with the deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi, affirmed that the security and stability of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are “an integral part of Pakistan’s own security”, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

Field Marshal Munir made the remarks during a meeting with the Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during which they discussed “ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the fields of economic collaboration, investment and security,” according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The two leaders also “exchanged views on regional developments and emphasised the importance of continued coordination to promote peace and stability in the region,” ISPR added.

Field Marshal Munir, during the meeting, “expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to the government of the UAE for its longstanding investments and continued support to Pakistan’s economy and security over the decades”.

As per ISPR, the army chief “noted that such support reflects the deep-rooted historical relations between the two brotherly countries and commended the constructive role of the UAE leadership in advancing economic and social development in Pakistan”.

During the meeting, the field marshal reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to continuing joint efforts to “further strengthen this partnership in all fields, in a manner that serves the interests of both brotherly peoples and contributes to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region”.

Pakistan and UAE maintain close bilateral relations. Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone call with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, lauding the Gulf country’s “consistent and unwavering support to Pakistan”.

Last month, Field Marshal Munir met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Qasr Al Shati Palace, where the two reviewed bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

PM Shehbaz to undertake 2-day Doha visit to explore new avenues of cooperation with Qatar: FO​

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday will depart on a two-day official visit to Doha, where he will meet the Qatari emir, the Foreign Office (FO) said.

The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the FO said in a press release.

During his visit, PM Shehbaz will hold a bilateral meeting with Sheikh Tamim, “covering the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including political engagement, economic collaboration, energy partnership, and people-to-people exchanges”, the FO added.

“The two sides will also explore new avenues of cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, energy, infrastructure development, and manpower export.”

The FO highlighted that both countries shared a “longstanding partnership characterised by mutual trust and close coordination at regional and international forums”.

“The visit will also provide an opportunity for both leaderships to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, reaffirming their resolve to work closely for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region,” the statement added.

“The visit reflects the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the two countries and underscores their shared commitment to further strengthening multifaceted cooperation,” the FO noted.

The premier will be accompanied by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, other ministers, and senior officials, according to the FO.

Qatar and Pakistan share strong diplomatic ties, rooted in their shared faith and values.

PM Shehbaz undertook two visits to Doha in September 2025 — one to express solidarity after Israeli attacks on the country and a second to attend a joint summit of the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

He had held meetings with the Qatari emir on both occasions, reaffirmed Pakistan’s “all-out support and solidarity” for the Gulf state.

Pakistan and Qatar on Tuesday discussed recent developments in the region, especially in Iran and Afghanistan, and stressed the need for de-escalation and dialogue to avoid possible conflicts.

The development came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani during an official visit.

“Regional developments were also discussed, in particular the situation in Iran and Afghanistan. Both sides emphasised the importance of dialogue, de-escalation and collective efforts to promote peace and stability in the region,” said an official press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

According to the handout, the meeting reflected the shared resolve of Pakistan and Qatar to further elevate their strategic partnership across all areas of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in defence and security and reaffirmed the strong and historic ties between Pakistan and Qatar, it said.

PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the ongoing collaboration between the armed forces of the two countries. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening defence cooperation and expanding collaboration.

Meanwhile, the Qatari official appreciated the professionalism and expertise of the Pakistan armed forces and conveyed Qatar’s interest in deepening defence partnership between the two countries, it said.

Earlier, PM Shehbaz, in a meeting with the minister of state for foreign trade of Qatar, underscored the significance of “enhancing trade volumes” between the two countries.

In his meeting with Minister of State for Foreign Trade of Qatar Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, who is also the chairman of the Pak-Qatar Joint Business Taskforce, the premier stressed the “importance of enhancing bilateral trade volumes” between the two countries, as per a statement via the PMO.

Qatar Businessmen Association calls on PM Shehbaz​

Separately, a delegation of the Qatar Businessmen Association (QBA), led by the association’s chairman Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, called on the prime minister, the PMO said in a separate statement.

The premier lauded the QBA’s “constructive role in strengthening economic and commercial linkages between Pakistan and Qatar”.

As per the statement, the prime minister also assured the delegation that “Pakistan attached high importance to private-sector-led engagement as a key pillar of the bilateral partnership”.

The premier invited the QBA members to “explore opportunities in infrastructure, logistics, energy, agriculture, technology and export-oriented manufacturing” in Pakistan.

The QBA chairman expressed interest in “enhancing business-to-business cooperation and exploring investment opportunities in Pakistan”.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.stressed the importance of diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes on Tuesday amid regional tensions involving Iran and Afghanistan.

Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir were also present in the meeting.

"The two leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest, emphasising the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution of disputes," said a press release from the PM Office.

It added that the two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening longstanding bilateral ties between.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will travel to Jeddah on Wednesday to participate in an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Executive Committee to discuss the situation in the Middle East and Israel's actions in Palestine.

The meeting, scheduled for February 26, will take place at the OIC General Secretariat and will be held at the Foreign Ministers' level.

According to diplomatic sources, the meeting comes in response to recent developments in the Middle East and Palestinian territories. It is expected that the session will strongly condemn Israel's recent actions to declare lands in the occupied West Bank as illegal Israeli property.
