What I recall fondly about the "Barra Khana" or "Grand Meal" (not that I ate at one ever) was the conduct of the officers.
When my father was the CO of various units, he and his officers would take a spoon-full and no more and leave as quickly as possible from the venue so the ORs/Jawans could eat their fill and not be bothered by senior officers being around.
Also, the tradition of "officers always eat last" was always kept alive at such events to ensure the men of the unit felt prioritized and taken care of.
