What I recall fondly about the "Barra Khana" or "Grand Meal" (not that I ate at one ever) was the conduct of the officers.

When my father was the CO of various units, he and his officers would take a spoon-full and no more and leave as quickly as possible from the venue so the ORs/Jawans could eat their fill and not be bothered by senior officers being around.

Also, the tradition of "officers always eat last" was always kept alive at such events to ensure the men of the unit felt prioritized and taken care of.

You would really be surprised between the officer/OR relationship depending on regiment/corps

FF it was alwasy very very close.

Signals/EME quite distant, and at points some abused their rank

True, and times have changed too.

The backgrounds of officers/non-commissioned are also much more similar than they used to be.

Yes and no, it is an interesting debate. You will still get upper middle/landed classes in the more prestigious cav/inf regiments, the more technical arms tends to attact middle and lower middle class, and this is demonstrated in their attitudes to ORs.

Getting off topic for a bit, landed people tended to have better relations and more respect for ORs.
