Do we need these assets land based? i guess they have dipping sonar and our threat is nearby, but unsure what they would add that the ATR MPAs do not already do

These are for coastal areas whereas the MPAs are long range perhaps.

Land based

AW-101 evaluated in mid 90s and even then the land based stuff and the conclusion was it’s good for SSG(N) use cases but ASW needs of PN is overkill.

Dipping sonar is great but today’s sonobuoys, SAR and MAD on fixed wing assets fill that gap.

Z-9s and a proposed follow on ship-borne asset will be enough combined with UAVs.
