PNS Khaibar (F-282) Commences Sea Trials in Türkiye, Marking Major Milestone in Pakistan Navy's Modernization

The Pakistan Navy’s Babur-class corvette PNS Khaibar (F-282) has commenced its Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT) from Istanbul Naval Shipyard, following the successful completion of outfitting and harbor trials. This milestone marks a key phase in the vessel’s journey toward operational deployment.

PNS Khaibar is the third of four multi-mission corvettes being acquired under the Pakistan-Türkiye MILGEM project, a major bilateral defense initiative. The ship has been constructed by Türkiye’s state-owned defense contractor ASFAT at the Istanbul Shipyard, while the remaining vessels are being built at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) under a technology transfer arrangement.

Modern Multi-Mission Corvette

The Babur-class corvettes are designed to support anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare roles. PNS Khaibar features stealth characteristics, a high degree of automation, and is equipped with modern sensors and combat management systems. Key performance specifications include a displacement of approximately 2,926 tons, a length of 108 meters, and a top speed exceeding 30 knots. It also offers a range of 3,500 nautical miles and an endurance of up to 15 days at sea.

The vessel is armed with a combination of surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, a 76mm main gun, close-in weapon systems, remote weapon stations, and advanced radar and sonar technologies.

Strengthening Indigenous Capability

The PN MILGEM project is a flagship example of defense collaboration between Pakistan and Türkiye. In addition to strengthening Pakistan’s maritime capabilities, it enhances local shipbuilding expertise through knowledge and technology transfer. The program is significantly contributing to the modernization of the Pakistan Navy and supports its objective of ensuring maritime security in the region.

Next Steps

Upon the successful completion of sea trials, PNS Khaibar will be delivered to the Pakistan Navy later this year. The induction of this advanced corvette will further enhance Pakistan’s ability to conduct sustained naval operations in both coastal and deep-sea environments.

The PNS Khaibar is expected to join its sister ships in bolstering regional deterrence and securing Pakistan’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region.

PN conducted 2-day Ex focusing on countering sub-conventional & asymmetric threats across all major ports & harbours of Pak, aimed at validating & refining Tactics, Techniques & Procedures to ensure robust defence of critical maritime infrastructure against asymmetric threats.

Ex involved coord ops by PN Fleet units, Pak Marines, SSG(N) & Naval Aviation. Scenarios were designed to simulate range of sub-conventional threats incl sabotage, infiltration & unconventional attacks to enhance inter-agency coord, situational awareness & response capabilities.

COMCOAST R/Adm Faisal Amin visited various operational setups at ports & harbours & witnessed live action simulations carried out by participating units. He appreciated the high level of preparedness & professional conduct demonstrated during the exercises.

Pakistan Marines are bolstered security guards, sigh at what could have been cross border behind enemy lines, on sea, air or land group built to carry out destruction & compliment or free up the SSGN.

But instead they are protecting border posts & AD units, again this points out a major issue in our doctrine approach, always lousy.

With the F-22P frigates near in on 20 years of service, they should be due for their mid-life refit. for improved sensor performance, the ship is going to need more electrical power. Is it worth it to swap out the engine for a more capable engine?

Would love to see 8 cell MDAS replace FM-90 but if substructure prohibits a VLS the would replace with a 20 Cell Levent or Goksur PDMS, upgrade the radar to Cenk 400N or Smart S mk2 andALPER LPI. Add Ares-2NC ECM and HIZIR anti-torpedo system.

Given the ineffectiveness of IAF fighters but significant effectiveness of drones and missiles, PAF AND PN clearly need to focus on air defense as a whole. While part of this can be addressed by HQ-19 acquisition, it really wont address drone risks especially in the realm of SEAD given you may not want to activate your netcentric S2A defenses for fear of giving away position. What would be more effective (and i think this was shown to a significant degree) are gun based CIWS especially those that could be semi to fully automous (think Phalanx based C-RAM). Pakistan needs to significantly invest in land based gun CIWS for antidrone protection at the border and around all sensitive locations such as missile and airbases power generation facilities and other locations of tactical and strategic significance. Type 1130 or gokdeniz (or better Mobile godeniz based Korkut) would be ideal.

It also (around high value locations) needs to invest in PDMS like Levant/Goksur or FL-3000N along with Land based CAMM-ER/Albatross NG (Akin to the shorter ranged Land-Ceptor) would be of great value in creating multi-tiered defenses together with HQ-19 AND HQ-9. The CAMM-ER for example are designed specifically to take out hypersonic targets like Brahmos. Whereas drones and slower moving targets can be engaged by gun based C-RAMs and PDMS.

Does anybody know what happened to the indigenous gunboat program? PN was supposed to induct several of those by now
