Pakistan seeks $10b in US backstop facility

I doubt this will be approved. If it does then Pakistan can get out of IMF program in 2027. Pakistan will have to prove it can manage economy without IMF for 5-10 years before foreigners think about serious long term investment.
Even if it is, it will be watered down to such an extent it may not even be relevant. But Chalo one can hope.

Gotta start somewhere, or should we sit at the footpath of the global south beggar bowl in hand?
In the human world, there are many examples of weak nations, races, and groups rising to power. Without exception, their rise was predicated on "unity".

This is easy to say, but very difficult to do.

When the British Empire withdrew from the Indian subcontinent, it planted numerous "landmines" for the entire subcontinent's civilization. These "landmines" are now considered treasures by the people of the subcontinent, seen as symbols of advanced civilization. The people of the subcontinent are unaware that these very "landmines" are the very core obstacle hindering the subcontinent's development.

Anyone who attempts to awaken the people of the subcontinent will inevitably step on these "landmines." He will face fierce criticism from the people of the subcontinent.

The same problem exists in Hong Kong.
Fortunately, we have resolved most of the problems through various means. Some issues still remain. However, this has led to criticism from many people around the world, including many Pakistanis.

Agreed and you can see even in Pakistan which is a microcosm of Pakistani opinions how polarized some are. Good post btw and I completely agree with you.

Who has been in power for the last four years and who has been claiming the stabilization of the economy as their great achievement? Should we instead blame Fatima Jinnah or Mujib for the situation today?
Bahi Jan, kindly come back on topic and discuss the title of this thread. Thanks.

Many Pakistanis on this forum, when it comes to issues of national governance, invariably point the finger at corruption.

But in reality, many completely misunderstand corruption…

I often ask them a question: What are you willing to sacrifice for your ideal Pakistan? ------ No one wants to answer this question.

If I were to explain this in another way:

If you were on the throne of power in Pakistan, would you be corrupt? ------ I believe that those who constantly rant on this forum would be far more corrupt than the current government.

What they truly despise is not corruption, but rather their complaint that they are not the beneficiaries.

That's all.

Sir, this request for the stabilization fund has been made by the party that has been in power for 4 years and claims its business prowsess and stabilisation of the economy as great achievements. I humbly request you to please explain why these facts are irrelevant to the thread. By the way, in an earlier post I have already stated that it would be a big achievement short term achievement for the regime of the day if they succeed in getting this facility from the US.

SBP buys $12.4 billion to rebuild reserves, limits rupee appreciation

Central bank absorbs dollar inflows, purchases $4.15 billion in 1HFY26 amid improving external position

The State Bank of Pakistan conducted net foreign exchange purchases of $12.4 billion between June 2024 and December 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen reserves and manage exchange rate movements.

Data cited by Arif Habib Limited showed that the central bank remained active in the interbank market, including net purchases of $1.024 billion in December 2025.

The intervention pattern indicates that the central bank has primarily been absorbing dollar liquidity, marking a shift from earlier periods when it sold foreign exchange to support the rupee amid reserve pressures.

In the first half of FY26, the central bank purchased $4.15 billion from the market, reflecting sustained inflows and relative stability in the external account during the period.

Analysts said the trend points to improving balance of payments conditions, supported by higher remittances, controlled imports, and inflows linked to the IMF programme.

Officials have indicated that the purchases are aimed at rebuilding foreign exchange reserves while avoiding sharp movements in the exchange rate. The strategy involves intervening during periods of inflows to accumulate reserves and manage volatility.

Economists noted that continued reserve buildup will depend on sustained external inflows and stable macroeconomic conditions, particularly amid risks linked to global oil prices and geopolitical developments.

Please explain the basis for your belief that those on this forum who criticise corruption in Pakistan would be far more corrupt than the present government. How many of their life stories are you personally familiar with ? In my own circle, the vast majority who oppose corruption and support democracy have built extremely successful careers far removed from politics and have no interest in being part of any government, let aside being beneficiaries of corruption.

Then why is Pakistan seeking 10 billion from the USA and 6.7 billion from SA.

Our corrupt political leaders such a President Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif are billionaires with stolen money from national exchequer. While the corrupt Panama ki Rani is now CM of Punjab.

Yes, but you have conveniently ignored the real power brokers..... those who are far more powerful than any politician and who imposed these same discredited leaders on Pakistan despite voters overwhelmingly rejecting them...

Pakistan's economy will never truly stabilize as long as the Army continues to dominate politics and large parts of the economy.... The country needs civilian supremacy and functional institutions, not perpetual guardianship....

And history isn't encouraging.... As we saw in East Pakistan, the generals seem more willing to take down the country with them than give up the power and privileges they enjoy....

A USD 10 billion bailout, or a 100 billion one, won't solve a thing if the system remains the same.... As the old Punjabi saying goes, no amount of drawing water will clean a well polluted by a dead dog.... you have to remove the dog first....

Instead of seeking loans as usual, why didn't they try to secure a trade deal? You know, focus on trade, rather than loans? But hey, that would be too sensible I guess.
