PSL comes to life as fans return to stands

KARACHI: For once, everything felt normal. The stands were no more deserted as echoing chants replaced deafening silence.

While the National Bank Stadium has been home to HBL Pakistan Super League action for the last 20 days, it was only on Tuesday evening when cricket was well and truly back at the historic venue as Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United clashed in the Qualifier.

The colourful seats of the arena were finally occupied by real people, adding life to the Karachi breeze, that swept through the stadium gently.

But these enthusiastic lovers of the sport had hard-earned the privilege of attending the match almost 24 hours after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave the go-ahead to allow fan entry in the PSL playoffs following a ban due to the government’s fuel-saving measures taken in the wake of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Responding to the premier’s green light, arrangements had to be made hurriedly by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the circumstances had their effect on the fans’ experience of buying the tickets.

Babar rises above the noise with match-winning statement

KARACHI: For Babar Azam, the roar that echoed around the National Bank Stadium on Tuesday night was more than just an ovation for a match-winning century. It was a release — of pressure, of scrutiny, and perhaps most of all, of a phase that had tested both his game and his resolve.

Standing at the centre of Peshawar Zalmi’s emphatic 70-run victory over Islamabad United in the HBL Pakistan Super League Qualifier, Babar cut a composed figure in the post-match press conference. But beneath the calm exterior was a quiet acknowledgement of the significance of the moment.

“I can definitely say it is quite different in the sense that it was a semi-final of sorts for us,” he said. “That’s why it’s very special for me.

“Performing in such a big match, the team needed me to stay out there as long as possible, and I think that’s exactly what was required.”

It was an innings that seemed to encapsulate both his past struggles and his renewed clarity. The century — his fourth in PSL history — not only propelled Zalmi into their first final in five years but also took him to the summit of the batting charts this season. With 588 runs, he now equals Fakhar Zaman’s record for the most runs in a single PSL campaign, with one match still to play.

Yet, the numbers tell only part of the story.

Hyderabad Kingsmen mow down 160 to knock Multan Sultans out

Hyderabad Kingsmen 162 for 2 (Sadaqat 64*, Usman 64, Smith 1-14) beat Multan Sultans 159 for 9 (Masood 69*, Akif 2-30, Hunain 2-31) by 8 wickets

Multan Sultans might have been the higher-ranked team, but Hyderabad Kingsmen came into this game with five wins in six. In one of the more clinical playoff performances in recent memory they dumped the Sultans out of the competition with ruthless efficiency, tying up their batters in knots before romping to the modest chase of 160 with 28 balls and eight wickets to spare.

They will now face Islamabad United on Friday, with the winner going through for a bite at the title on Sunday against Peshawar Zalmi.

The Kingsmen came into this game off the back of the competition's biggest win over Rawalpindiz, and played as if they still had net run rate catching up to do.

The Sultans, meanwhile, had ominously lost their previous two games, and hadn't won a match against a team that qualified for the playoffs since beating this very opposition 28 days ago.

Half-centuries from Usman Khan and Maaz Sadaqat, combined with disciplined bowling, powered Hyderabad Kingsmen to an eight-wicket victory over Multan Sultans in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11's Eliminator 1 on Wednesday.

Kingsmen's victory in the high-stakes fixture drew curtains on Sultans' campaign and meant that the new entrants will go on and face three-time champions Islamabad United in the Eliminator 2 at the same venue on Friday in a bid to qualify for the eight-team tournament's final.

Hunain's clutch 20th over sends Hyderabad Kingsmen into PSL final

Earlier, Usman Khan's 61 had set Islamabad United a competitive target of 186

Hyderabad Kingsmen 186 for 5 (Usman 61*, Imad 2-16) beat Islamabad United 184 for 7 (Chapman 43, Hunain 2-37, M Ali 2-44) by two runs

With Islamabad United needing only six runs in the 20th over to make the PSL 2026 final, Hunain Shah conceded just three runs to instead take Hyderabad Kingsmen into the title clash. Kingsmen will now face Peshawar Zalmi on Sunday for the PSL trophy.

The odds were heavily stacked against Kingsmen with six balls to go. Chris Green and Faheem Ashraf had just plundered Mohammad Ali for 22 runs in the 19th, but Hunain began the 20th with a dot and then nailed five consecutive yorkers. The third of those yorkers dismissed Faheem, holing out to long off, and bringing a new batter on strike. Eventually, with United needing four off the final delivery, all Hunain conceded was a leg bye.

No total was going to be safe on Friday night at the Gaddafi Stadium with a belter of a pitch on offer and dew present. United had 187 to chase - nothing too audacious for this surface - and sensational cameos of Mark Chapman (43 off 26), Haider Ali (31 off 16), and Green (21 not out off nine) brought them back after an early stutter.

That early jolt in the chase came from a hostile spell of fast bowling and the trouble caused made by spinners Saim Ayub and Hassan Khan. The batting trio, though, ensured United could recover from 68 for 4 in ten overs, to leave a jam-packed crowd entertained till the last ball.
