I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or serious, but it does seem that as long as India stayed out of the American camp the Pakistan Army was used to threaten it. As soon as India jumped into the American camp, they dumped Pakistan.

But the clever generals of the Pakistan Army sold their services to the Americans for another role: to create chaos in the Muslim world. They worked with CIA to provoke the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and made dollars fighting the Russians. Then they helped America invade Afghanistan and made dollars helping the Americans.

Today their main value is in suppressing a major Muslim country, Pakistan, with a population of 250 million. That's a very worthwhile service for the Americans and Israelis. And they do it for free. America doesn't have to pay them a penny. All they want is for America to overlook their crimes and to keep issuing green cards to their families. Not a bad deal for America.

Of course, I don't believe in these conspiracies. That is why I was surprised that people can 'connect the dots' of recent unrest in Pakistan to events 80 years back and create a grand theory of determinism. For example, you mentioned 'dumped Pakistan'; that was the consequence of Pakistan choosing to side with Taliban (as beneficial to its long-term interests) and 'dumping' U.S. The break happened at or near bin Laden capture in Pakistan army town. The previous bonhomie was an artifact of Cold War realpolitik than any great grand plan. Pakistan found it easier to be a rentier nation during the 1980's under Zia-ul-Haq and that suited the Cold warriors just fine. Same story with Afghan war in after 2001 and Musharaff's decision to become a rent-an-army. Today, nobody is 'suppressing' Pakistan'. The current events are the consequences of poorly developed polity over many generations and are not fundamentally different from the situation in many other countries. Who is 'suppressing' Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and recently, Bangladesh?

Just under Busharraf, more Pakistanis were sold to Amreeka Bahadur than killed by India.
