Pakistan's New Provinces Plan ?

Pakistan simply does not have the luxury of wasting tens of billions and decades in vanity projects like the oil sheikhs do.

Look at Neom. It has been a massive financial disaster and even the al Sauds are pulling back on it.
What does Neom has to do with EZ model?

BTW, Saudi Arabia isn’t just moving toward Special Economic Zones (SEZs); it’s already using and building more to become a global business hub.

Saudi Special Economic Zones (SEZs), special areas where businesses get easier rules, lower taxes, and faster approvals. These zones are part of Vision 2030, the country’s plan to grow its economy beyond oil.

Saudi Arabia has created several major zones focused on technology, logistics, manufacturing, and shipping. They offer benefits like 100% foreign ownership, tax cuts, and fast business setup, which attract global companies.

Sorry to say, but what is our leadership is doing?

Right from the horse's mouth :

Where will the money to set up SEZs in Pakistan come from ? We are barely getting by on Saudi rollovers and drips from the IMF.

EZ , if managed properly can be a productive subset of the provinces however not a set of it's own ....let the multiple provinces compete.

The argument that Economic Zones (EZs) should remain under provincial control to foster "provincial competition" sounds appealing, but it ignores 75 years of bureaucratic reality.

Provinces are political units designed around votes, turf protection, and constituencies, not high-speed global trade. Expecting a provincial bureaucracy to run a modern, export-driven economic zone is like using a bicycle to tow an airplane or expecting a 1998 Nokia to run TikTok.

Placing EZs under provincial administration fails for several key reasons:
  • Mismatch in Capacity: "Provincial competition" between vastly unequal regions like Punjab and Balochistan isn't a fair contest. it’s telling a camel to race a Tesla.
  • Bureaucratic Gridlock: Provincial systems move at the speed of paperwork. Every business decision gets bogged down in endless red tape requiring a dozen signatures, slow approvals, and endless delays.
  • Political Focus over Economic Performance: Local leadership routinely prioritizes short-term political interest and IMF bailouts over long-term industrial strategy and global competitiveness.

Nations that successfully leverage
EZs such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, China, and Vietnam do not treat them as administrative side projects for regional governments. They operate EZs as fully independent, streamlined economic machines stripped of local political interference.

EZs require total independence to remain fast, flexible, and entirely focused on foreign investment and exports. Subordinating an EZ to provincial politics simply turns a Ferrari into a rickshaw, ensuring it fails before it ever reaches the starting line.

PPP would have a collective heart attack and wait for the crybabies citing "lol constitutional amendments" lol.

Constitution is a neat little wedge when they need it, other times it's a hindrance. 😂
you can see sindhi topi is on now. thats the first sumptom of heart attack. all political parties did not start local govenrment and create a some kind of monoply and now all are losing their values and specially contral and money control. i pray that it happens. Specially karachi it was a jewel of Pakistan and now its plundered by ppp . instead of getting gold egg now they are losing whole duck .

100% agree with you... slightly OT, I was born in Karachi, but my heart and soul belongs to Pakistan. We really need to do away with these ch ideals of "provincial pride". Like get real guys, your passport reads "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" for a reason.

As someone mentioned that “creating more provinces is easier and cheaper than building Economic Zones” is like saying buying five new phones is cheaper than fixing your WiFi.

It sounds confident… until you actually think about it.

Creating a new province isn’t “cheap.”
It means:

• new chief minister
• new cabinet
• new assembly
• new bureaucracy
• new departments
• new buildings
• new budgets

Basically, you’re opening a brand new government franchise.
It’s like opening a new KFC every time you want to fix a chicken recipe.

Meanwhile, Economic Zones are small, focused, high‑speed engines built for business, not politics.
They don’t need 200 politicians, 500 officers, and a parade of VIP cars.

And let’s be honest, Our leadership thinks about the IMF first and the budget later, like a student who checks his friend’s homework before writing his own.

Countries that actually want to grow, Saudi Arabia, UAE, China, Singapore, Estonia, choose EZs, not more provinces.

Creating more provinces is “easy” only in the same way eating 10 burgers is “easy.”
Sure, you can do it… but you’ll regret it immediately.
EZs are cheaper, faster, and actually produce money.
Provinces are expensive, slow, and mostly produce speeches.
So no, creating more provinces isn’t the smart move.
It’s the “pressing restart on the same broken game” move.
