WASHINGTON: More than one-third of Pakistan’s population faces overlapping deprivations in health, education and living standards, according to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released on Monday.

Figures released by the UNDP in New York show that 38.3 per cent of Pakistan’s population was multidimensionally poor, compared with 16.4 per cent in India and 14.9pc in Bangladesh. The estimates are based on household surveys conducted in different years and do not provide a strictly contemporaneous comparison.

In Pakistan, the intensity of deprivation among those classified as multidimensionally poor stood at 51.7pc. Another 12.9pc of the population was considered vulnerable to multidimensional poverty, indicating that a substantial share of people remained at risk of falling into acute deprivation.

Unlike conventional income-based measures, the MPI assesses overlapping disadvantages in areas such as nutrition, child mortality, years of schooling, school attendance, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing and household assets.

The report also documents a worrying global reversal. The number of people living in multidimensional poverty has risen for the first time in 15 years, reaching 1.2 billion, as families struggle to meet their basic needs.

The latest total is 51.5 million higher than the previous update. Children account for more than half of those affected, with 617m living in multidimensional poverty, while 83pc of the total live in rural areas.

The global findings underline the scale of the challenge facing governments, particularly in providing essential services to disadvantaged communities. Poverty is not simply a shortage of income; it can also mean inadequate nutrition, missed schooling and a lack of clean water or electricity.

South Asia accounts for a substantial share of global deprivation. The report says the region accounts for at least one-third of global deprivations in nutrition, housing, and years of schooling.

It is also home to 150m poor people living in households where a school-aged child is not attending school, highlighting persistent barriers to education despite broader development gains.

The UNDP’s regional figures put South Asia’s multidimensional poverty rate at approximately 19.3pc, with another 18.4pc of the population vulnerable to such poverty. Health accounts for about 29.9pc of the contribution to regional multidimensional poverty, education for 33.7pc and living standards for 36.3pc.

The figures show how disadvantages in different areas reinforce one another. Poor health, inadequate education and substandard living conditions can trap families in poverty and make it difficult for them to improve their circumstances.

“The rise in poverty should be a wake-up call for the world,” said UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo.

“Behind these figures are 1.2 billion people facing hardships that reinforce one another: hunger, missed schooling and a lack of clean water or electricity. This is unacceptable.”

Poverty in Pakistan won't be resolved if we follow the exact same trodden path as everyone else. Across the world the middle class and working class are feeling the pinch of end stage capitalism. Growth in Pakistan has to be worker focused. We need to genuinely create an environment where we can have 1000 millionaires rather than 1 billionaire.

Not a day passes by now where one reads in the news of infanticide, suicides and homicides due to extreme poverty. Robberies have become the norm and petty thuggery fast tracked to murderers and organised criminal empires.

The absolute stark contrast between haves and have nots threaten the social order like never before.

Munir fan club will claim its PTI propaganda. Yahoodi saazish yo.
So immediately upon posting important data about actual societal challenges faced by Pakistan, you choose to politicise the thread and thereby dissuade the forum from commenting constructively.

Nice Try . This is the problem with PTI cultists they dont read. btw the survey is from 2018. and no sample size was provided.

The west started a war on Pakistan's border twice in the last 50 years which destabilized the country and its society.

They applied sanctions on Pakistan in the 90s due to going nuclear and only now the unofficial embargo is beginning to lift.

India through its proxies has been hammering half of the country for 20 years, making it difficult to invite FDI.

India with all the trade and investment is still an absolute shithole. They have had a clean run so they should have no excuses.

European countries are not a good example. They benefited from slavery and plundering the brown and black races for centuries. No sanctions or enemies to worry about. Complete control and influence over the banking system.

Considering all of this Pakistan has survived. Most other nations would have collapsed. You can't kill a nation that refuses to die. 30 years of peace and good policy will transform the country.

Poverty is real in Pakistan not a conspiracy and so far no govt in last 30 years have been able to steer the country in the right direction. Our policies are shallow and our slogans are rhetoric. You cannot solve a real issue with rhetoric.

Situation is so bad that anyone who had 4-5 workers in our markets have now 1 at max. Even we had to let go 2 of our boys. Purchasing power is down the drain. Inflation is crazy. Even in cities like Lahore you have at least 3 hrs of load shedding. Malnutrition and stunting is rife. Half of Pakistan is illiterate.

The regression never stops.

The problem with askari and patwari cultists is that they are either low IQ and ignorant or liars or both. If you had bothered to do a little research, it would have told you that for Pakistan the source data is from the Household Integrated Economic Survey 2024-25, which was finalized and published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics in late 2025.

It is from a few days ago. Here are some links for you since you are apparently such a reader .

Expect a notification soon instructing the media not to talk about poverty, like the recent notification not to report on terrorists incidents.

Pakistani dictatorships have been failures from 1958 till today and the deepening poverty is another damning indictment.

Country is ruled by a dictatorship that is only interested in collecting geopolitical rent, and then siphoning it abroad. Dictators, from Ayub to Munir, do not give a fig about the ordinary people.

Condition and situation of people in Pakistan is not good.
Enrollement in universities is decreasing due to cost.
Umemployemnt is at its peak.
Economy is in shamble.
All taxes on salary class its a huge burden its look like a pure extortion.
Cost of energy is too huge for people as middle class is decreasing with every passing day.
Its a heaven for elite for sure

Same here on the forum. Banned me from the other thread for talking facts.

Nonetheless, nothing new. From putting Quaid e Azam on house arrest in Ziarat to putting an elected CM in an illegal arrest in 2026, we have came a full circle. Long Live the Establishment.
