Panic as radioactive material released in raging fire at South Carolina nuclear complex

Radioactive material was released after a fire broke out at the Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina, sparking an area emergency declaration. The fire has reportedly been extinguished.

Radioactive material was released after a raging fire broke out at a nuclear complex in South Carolina, sparking local panic.

A site area emergency was declared at the federal nuclear complex in the Palmetto State. The fire has reportedly been extinguished.

Officials called the emergency at 5:39 p.m. on Wednesday after a fire broke out in a single room at the Savannah River National Laboratory near Aiken, the site wrote on its official X page.

The authorities told local station WRDW that there was "an unfiltered, ground-level radiological release.

They emphasized that no contamination was reported outside the impacted facility, and there has been no indication of consequences beyond the site's boundaries.

Nevertheless, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a flight restriction, citing a U.S. government "nuclear incident" at the site.

"Local residents should tune in to local radio and TV stations where state officials will announce any actions citizens may need to take. Residents should stay tuned to these stations for updated instructions."

The cause of the fire and the nature and amount of material released, as well as whether anyone was injured, all remain unclear.

The SRS is located on about 310 square miles of land along the South Carolina-Georgia border.

It was built in the 1950s and produced plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons during the Cold War, but its work is now focused on nuclear materials management, environmental cleanup and research.

Believe me, way back in the 90s, I was a part time student worker managing a monthly newspaper for the Savannah River Site. I don't recall much now. Basically, I was just editing content given to me for clarity and whatnot and publishing the content. I think the content was about how the govt was cleaning up / removing nuclear material. Perhaps something to do with the Cold War ended a few years ago.
Strangely, that large area of SRS is kind of strange: A gap on the map with not even a zip code assigned. An Area 51 of South Carolina!

Ah yes, because the United States—which definitely doesn't have a few thousand nuclear warheads and isn't currently starring in a reality show directed by a madman—has unleashed its lapdogs at that absolute comedy club known as the IAEA to obsess exclusively over Iran. Never mind the minor detail that Iran’s nuclear program has been proven time and time again to be strictly about powering toasters and reading bedtime stories, yet these Western puppets are desperately trying to form an "illegal coalition." Shocking.

Naturally, the US and Ukraine are just dying to weaponize nuclear programs for fun, because America is famously the most careful, safety-conscious nuclear toddler on the playground. Meanwhile, that charming little regime in Israel openly threatens Islamic nations with nukes and brags about its secret nuclear stash while the IAEA sits back, deeply invested in a permanent game of blind, deaf, and mute.

For the past thirty years, this totally legitimate organization has done nothing but stalk Iran and hand-deliver the home addresses and grocery lists of Iranian nuclear scientists directly to American and Israeli hit squads. Clearly, America is the *last* nation on Earth with any moral standing to possess this technology, and its entire nuclear arsenal needs to be confiscated and put in time-out. After all, who else holds the prestigious world record for dropping atomic bombs on innocent civilians in Japan and casually tossing depleted uranium around Iraq, Syria, and everywhere else? Truly, the pinnacle of nuclear responsibility.
