Manufacturing HIV drug in Pakistan: Ferozsons partners with US-based Gilead

BR Web Desk
October 3, 2024

Ferozsons Laboratories Limited (Ferozsons), a Pakistani pharmaceutical company, has entered into a non-exclusive voluntary license agreement with Gilead Sciences Ireland UC, a US-based biopharmaceutical company, for the manufacture and sale of licensed generic lenacapavir.

The listed company shared the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday.

Ferozsons informed that it is one of six global partners to have signed a voluntary license agreement with Gilead to produce high-quality generic of lenacapavir.

“Lenacapavir is approved by US FDA [Food and Drug Administration] for infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) for heavily treatment-experienced patients (HTE), and is being investigated for use in HIV prevention,” said the company.

The agreement covers lenacapavir for HIV prevention (pending approval), in addition to the approved indication of HIV treatment in heavily treatment-experienced (HTE) adults with multi-drug resistant HIV.

The use of lenacapavir for HIV prevention is investigational and the safety and efficacy of lenacapavir for this use have not been established, said the company.

“Under this non-exclusive license, Ferozsons or its affiliates can manufacture and sell, subject to required regulatory approvals, its licensed generic of Gilead proprietary compound Lenacapavir in 120 (one hundred twenty) primarily low and lower- middle-income countries.

“Under the licensing agreement, the company has a right to receive a technology transfer of the Gilead manufacturing process for lenacapavir to enable it to scale up production,” read the statement.

Ferozsons shared that Lenacapavir is available in two dosage forms: (a) an injectable drug product in a vial kit configuration containing 309 mg/mL Lenacapavir, or, (b) an oral tablet drug product containing 300mg of Lenacapavir.

“The injectable drug product will be manufactured at Ferozsons’ JV Subsidiary, BF Biosciences Limited (BFBIO), while the oral variant will be manufactured at Ferozsons’ oral solid dosage (OSD) facility.

Editorial: Antibiotic resistance is nothing less than a medical emergency

Editorial:

Antibiotic resistance is nothing less than a medical emergency

A coordinated strategy is needed at a national scale to reduce the microbial danger.

WHO would have thought that the medicine that was developed to cure disease would one day be overpowered by the very microorganisms it was supposed to target?

Medical science may have progressed with lightning speed over the decades, but has now hit a significant roadblock in the form of antimicrobial resistance. From Nov 18 to Nov 24 — World Antimicrobial Awareness Week — countries will be reminded of this grim reality, as thousands of people worldwide continue to die because their sickness is not responding to antibiotic treatment.

This should be especially alarming for a country like Pakistan, where the consumption of antibiotics is the third highest in the world. There are no checks on the intake of these drugs, thanks to a general lack of awareness and a lax attitude on the part of doctors, pharmacies and patients. Doctors often recommend antibiotics to patients without even diagnosing their illness; pharmacies readily sell them over the counter, and those consuming them resort to their improper use.

Under these and other circumstances, pathogens develop resistance. Indeed, when in a country like the US, with its high-quality healthcare, almost one-third of antibiotic prescriptions are not needed, one can expect worse in Pakistan, where regulations and international best practices are routinely overlooked.

The situation is nothing less than a medical emergency: between now and 2050, medical experts expect antibiotic resistance to kill 40m people worldwide. A disproportionate number is likely to be from the developing countries where healthcare is poor and disease-rife — a situation that is compounded by high levels of illiteracy and lack of education. Against this backdrop, it would indeed be a miracle if this year’s theme for WAAW — ‘Educate. Advocate. Act now’ is taken seriously by our authorities — not simply for health reasons but also to reduce the huge economic burden caused by longer hospital stays, more expensive, often inaccessible, therapy, and loss of work hours.

Pakistani and Chinese companies have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth around $250 million to boost trade in the medical and surgical sector, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on Saturday.

Pakistan has held strong bilateral relations with China which has supported it through many investments and development projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project which was termed as a “lifeline” for the country’s economy.

The MoUs were signed during a China-Pakistan B2B matchmaking conference on the medical equipment and surgical instrument sector held in Beijing yesterday.

APP, quoting China Economic Net (CEN), said that Silk Road Assistance Industrial Internet Platform — a provider of advisory services for companies to do cross-border businesses — signed MoUs with Pakistan’s dental and surgical instrument manufacturer Sawuat, as well as Chinese pharmaceutical company UPH Biopharma.

According to CEN, the collaboration aims to encourage more Chinese companies to set up joint ventures in the medical instrument sector.

Pakistan’s embassy in Beijing also confirmed in a statement yesterday that three MoUs worth $250m were signed during the conference.

The embassy said it hosted, in collaboration with the Board of Investment (BOI), the sixth moot in a series of sector-specific B2B matchmaking meetings focused on investment partnerships between Pakistan and China in the medical sector.

“Over 80 Chinese companies and associations and more than 20 Pakistani companies participated both in person and online,” it noted.

On the occasion, Pakistan’s ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi highlighted the growing potential of the medical industry in Pakistan, saying it was valued at over $600m.

The embassy said Hashmi announced Pakistan would host the 4th Health, Engineering, and Minerals Show (HEMS) in Lahore from April 17-19, 2025, with a special focus on surgical and medical instruments.
