Poland has rejected China’s request to reopen its border with Belarus after a series of Russian drone incursions, increasing political tensions between China and the European Union.

The latest measures, including the closure of the vital Małaszewicze crossing used by the China-Europe Railway Express, immediately disrupted a key artery in Sino-European trade and signaled Warsaw’s hardening security posture.

The Polish government’s decision followed an incident on September 9, in which more than 20 unmanned aerial vehicles from Belarus and Russia entered Poland’s airspace. Moscow and Minsk denied hostile intent, but Warsaw described the flights as provocations and clear violations of its sovereignty.

In a meeting with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski in Warsaw on Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi failed to persuade Poland to reopen its border with Belarus.

Chinese state media and several commentators swiftly criticized Poland’s decision, warning that the disruption threatens billions of euros worth of China-EU trade. Some suggested NATO influence lay behind Warsaw’s stance, claiming the United States could benefit economically from shifting logistics away from Eurasian rail corridors.

“Who is playing with the geopolitical powder keg and whose lifeline is being put at risk?” a Henan-based columnist writing under the pseudonym “Cuadrado” asks in his article.

“This incident is rooted in complex geopolitical rivalries,” he writes. “Russia views Eastern Europe as a strategic buffer, while NATO’s continuous expansion, including plans to boost its rapid reaction force to 300,000 troops and the accession of Sweden and Finland, has undeniably compressed Russia’s strategic space.”

In this tense and confrontational atmosphere, even minor military actions may be overinterpreted as both sides react out of security fears or US containment strategies, Cuadrado writes.

I think China responds with extra inspection on Polish milk and products. Besides, Poland also hurt the European car industry, which depends on Chinese parts. Most of the trade between the EU and China is by sea. Let's see how long it can last.

At EU level, the policy backdrop is a structurally imbalanced commercial relationship with China. According to the Commission and Eurostat, bilateral goods trade reached €732 billion in 2024, mostly carried by sea. Within that total, the EU’s goods deficit with China peaked at almost €400 billion in 2022 before narrowing in 2023. Against this scale, estimates that the rail closure affects on the order of €25 billion annually illustrate why the system-wide impact is limited even if certain supply chains face short-term pain.

I suspect that, behind the scene, less polite words were used by Wang Yi to express the Chinese view on Poland's attempt the hinder the freedom of global trade.

The migrants do not ride on Chinese freight trains. Blocking the railroad connection between China and Europe to prevent migrants from coming through Belarus is a very crude form of blackmail that will hit back.

Should the blockade continue Poland will have to bury all hope of any future investment from China.

Western European companies who depend on the railroad connection for their trade will also become more hostile to Poland.

The coming defeat of NATO in Ukraine will contribute to the end of the military alliance.

Poland's outrageous behavior makes it more likely that the defeat in Ukraine will also help to break up the European Union.

Poland is currently the recipient of the largest EU's agricultural subsidies. Why should Germany and others continue to pay for those when Poland is impeding their trade?

Putin has already seen large numbers of Russians flee to the West after announcing a draft for the Ukrainian War. Dont you think a flood will ensue if he decides to take on NATO. If he has any troops left they will be tripping over their own citizens trying to get out.

that’s empty threat. defeat of Ukraine, Europe, NATO? why not alien race?
Poland more likely shuts down permanently the entire goods transport between EU to China, Russia and Belarus.

The Poles have conceded defeat after China announced sanctions on Polish dairy products and fruit in a trade war that lasted less than 48 hours.

On September 17th, China and Poland issued a joint statement, in which Poland promised to "jointly ensure the safe and smooth operation of the China Europe freight train channel".

yes, but it didn't lift the ban. There is no mention of the ban being lifted.

Yesterday, the China Europe Railway resumed operation. This ban lasted less than 48 hours.

Poland is fully investing in the EV industry, and it needs China's rare earth, lithium, battery technology authorization and EV enterprise investment. Poland has no chips to engage in a trade war with China, and this ban is just a farce created by some puppet officials controlled by the CIA. The Chinese government only promised that the Russian military would not use trains to attack Poland, and the Polish government lifted the ban.

There are a large number of vested interests in the Polish political arena who have benefited from Central European trade, and they will soon eliminate traitors who have betrayed Polish and European interests to the United States.

It's funny that Poland doesn't know how much he weighs. He's not qualified to fight a trade war.

The rail corridor is still shut as per Polish sources. If you wish to prove otherwise post the news from a reputable English language source and not a screen grab in Chinese.

They are just doing the usual Chinese smokescreening

This story is from yesterday from Belarus as apparently Lukashenka says it is still closed

Lukashenka at a meeting with a representative of China: Poland's closure of the border is an unfriendly move towards Beijing

On September 22, in Minsk, Alyaksandr Lukashenka met with Li Xi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

According to the state agency Belta, Alyaksandr Lukashenka discussed with Li Xi, among other things, regional politics, including Belarus's relations with Russia, China, and Ukraine, and also raised the issue of Poland's closure of its border.

On September 11, Poland, by decision of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, completely closed its border with Belarus, including railway crossings, “to ensure the security of the state” in connection with the Belarusian-Russian exercises “Zapad-2025.” The head of government emphasized that the country is struggling with an increase in provocations from Russia and Belarus. Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Marcin Kierwiński announced that “border crossings will only be opened when we are 100% sure that the situation does not pose any threat to Poland and Polish citizens.”

On September 15, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid his first official visit to Poland in six years. Even before the Chinese diplomat arrived in Warsaw, there were reports that the Polish authorities intended to appeal to Chinese President Xi Jinping to exert influence on Belarusian dictator, especially in the context of Warsaw's decision to block, among other things, the crossing in Małaszewicze – the “window of China” for exports to Europe. According to data from transport market analysts at Upply, rail transport between Beijing and the EU will account for 10.6% of exports in 2024.

The Polish government's hopes do not seem unfounded. On July 2 last year, Poland already closed rail traffic at the customs terminal in Małaszewicze for 33 hours due to hybrid attacks by the Belarusian regime. This happened after a meeting between President Andrzej Duda and the Chinese leader. At that time, Beijing quickly and effectively influenced Minsk's policy, which caused a sudden drop in the number of illegal border crossings from Belarus to Poland.

Germany and France dictate the European Union. Everyone else within the block are allowed to express their opinion.

If they don't listen, then Germany-France adopt a "two-speed" Europe strategy. It's that simple.

The container ship Istanbul Bridge completed its loading operations at the northern area of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on Monday, and will depart for the Port of Felixstowe, the largest container port in the UK, which marked the official launch of the world's first China-Europe Arctic express route. In just 18 days, the cargo onboard will arrive directly at Felixstowe, setting a new record for shipping time from Ningbo to Europe.

The Global Times learned that this Arctic route links major Chinese ports including Ningbo, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Dalian on one end, and key European ports such as Felixstowe in the UK, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Hamburg in Germany, and Gdańsk in Poland on the other.

It is the fastest container shipping route between China and Europe's main base ports. By crossing the Arctic Ocean, the route significantly shortens the journey and transport time, giving Chinese companies a valuable edge in aligning with Europe's peak stocking season for Christmas.

"The cargo on board covers a wide range of categories, including daily necessities, clothing, and components, as well as emerging products such as energy storage cabinets and power batteries. Once it arrives, it will be distributed across Europe," Zhou Xiaoping, Deputy Director of Daxie Customs, a subsidiary of Ningbo Customs, told the Global Times.

The Global Times learned from Ningbo Customs that the European Union is currently the largest trading partner of Ningbo Port. In the first eight months of this year, the total value of imports and exports between Ningbo Port and the EU reached 330.74 billion yuan ($46.5 billion), a year-on-year increase of 12 percent, accounting for about 18 percent of Ningbo Port's total foreign trade.

When talking about the advantage of this express compared with traditional routes, Li Xiaobin, Chief Operating Officer of Sea Legend, told the Global Times that the China-Europe Arctic Express Route is shorter in distance and highly efficient, significantly improving timeliness while reducing costs and enhancing the speed of logistics supply chains.

The route also offers a relatively safe geopolitical environment. "The regions it passes through are politically and economically stable, which reduces risks such as piracy, congestion, and the spillover of conflicts. This enhances the safety of shipping fleets, opens up the Ice Silk Road, and secures the third corridor of the China-Europe supply chain," explained Li.

As a shipper, Zhou Chujing, logistics procurement manager at Sigenergy, a smart manufacturing hub in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu Province, told the Global Times that this shipment consists of household energy storage equipment, with each container valued at about $300,000, to be exported via the Netherlands to various parts of Europe. "The main reason for choosing the China-Europe Arctic express route is its favorable transit time, which greatly benefits the entire marketing chain," Zhou noted.

The express route not only significantly shortens the journey and transportation time, helping domestic companies reduce costs and improve efficiency, but also carries important strategic significance, analysts said.

In 2018, China released a white paper titled "China's Arctic Policy," saying that China hopes to work with all parties to build a "Polar Silk Road" through developing the Arctic shipping routes.

The China-Europe Arctic Express route helps reduce the need for gauge changes on the Europe-bound land railways, cutting train dwell times and thereby improving economic efficiency. At the same time, shipping via the high seas avoids the inconveniences caused by sudden incidents arising from geopolitical conflicts in Europe, Jian Junbo, director of the Center for China-Europe Relations at Fudan University's Institute of International Studies, told the Global Times.

He also noted that the route can also be an important public good contributed by China to the international community, and countries such as Japan and South Korea can also take part by cooperating with China in developing the route. "China's 'Ice Silk Road' aims to build international shipping lanes together. We welcome goods from Japan and South Korea to pass through this route, with all parties jointly safeguarding regional stability for mutual benefit," Jian said.

"This route significantly shortens the shipping cycle, making it highly attractive for time-sensitive goods and cross-border e-commerce," Sun Xuejun, Party Secretary and Chairman of Zhejiang Seaport Logistics Group Co., Ltd., said in an interview with the Global Times, noting that the route offers a relatively stable sailing environment with less likelihood of disruptions from unexpected events.

Strategically, it can effectively reduce the risk of blockades or restrictions, ensuring greater autonomy and security in transportation. In the long run, it will also promote diversification in trade patterns and strengthen the resilience of the global trade system against risks, said Sun.

Sun noted that the inaugural voyage of the route also marked the completion of the "final piece of the puzzle" for Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's global shipping network.

From the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans to the Arctic Ocean, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is now fully connected to all major navigable oceans, further solidifying its position as a hub port, Sun added.
