ISLAMABAD: The first of its kind in Pakistan, a comprehensive strategy has been developed for the digitalisation of the transport system in Rawalpindi to further facilitate commuters.

Informed sources told The Express Tribune that the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will develop the software for this first digital public transport system in Rawalpindi. Under this project, a control room and an e-tag system will be installed at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal.

This system will collect complete data on vehicles parked at the bus terminal, including the vehicle's registration number, owner's name, vehicle colour, fitness certificate details, driver's license, route number, and tracking system.

All details of vehicles entering and exiting the bus terminal will be collected in the control room. This will ensure road and passenger safety, and only those vehicles that meet safety and service standards will be allowed to leave the bus terminal.

Following the models of Paris, London, and the United States, Pakistan will benefit from the country's first digitised transportation system. Upon the success of this project, it will be expanded to other cities in Punjab.

The completion of this great project will not only provide citizens with comfortable travel but also help improve vehicle fitness levels. Additionally, citizens will be able to lodge complaints online against any public and government transport services.

‘Punjab meets wheat sowing target’

Dawn
Dec 24, 2024

Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani on Monday claimed the province has achieved nearly 99 per cent of the wheat sowing target set for the current season.

The provincial government had set a target of cultivating wheat on 16.5 million acres, he said, adding that wheat had already been sown on 16.25m acres according to the data provided by the agriculture department.

In a statement regarding wheat cultivation, the minister attributed this success to the farmer-friendly initiatives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as under her leadership, several schemes such as Kissan Card and the Green Tractor Programmes were launched for the benefit of agriculturists.

He said Kissan Cards were provided to farmers owning up to 12.5 acres of land. He added that 1,000 laser-levellers of land would be distributed through a transparent balloting among the growers who had sown wheat on land between 12.5 and 25 acres.

Similarly, 1,000 tractors would be given free of cost through transparent balloting to the farmers with over 25 acres of wheat cultivation land.

During the cultivation, adequate availability of DAP and urea was being ensured and the inputs were being offered at lower prices.

The price of Punjab Seed Corporation’s wheat seed bags has been reduced from Rs6,300 to Rs4,500 per bag, he concluded.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has instructed Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan to implement an e-taxi service across the province, following the model of China’s electric taxi system.

The Punjab transport department has already started laying the foundation for the project, with discussions underway with multiple electric vehicle manufacturers.

Major stakeholders, such as the Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), have shown interest in partnering for the initiative, according to local media report.

In the initial phase, the e-taxi service will launch in Lahore and divisional headquarters, with plans to extend the service to other major cities across Punjab. The service will operate 24/7, offering citizens an affordable, eco-friendly transportation alternative.

Officials anticipate that the introduction of e-taxis will enhance access to cost-effective travel options while slightly affecting employment in the traditional taxi industry. This project is part of the government's wider effort to promote sustainable urban mobility across the province.

Additionally, the Punjab government has initiated the procurement of electric buses for Faisalabad and Bahawalpur. This initiative aims to tackle significant transportation issues, including the shortage of quality public transport, heavy traffic congestion, and environmental concerns such as smog.

The project prioritises sustainability by introducing eco-friendly electric buses to public transportation in these cities. To ensure high-quality standards, the procurement process will include a rigorous pre-qualification of firms, based on strict criteria.

Eligible firms must meet several requirements: a minimum net worth of $200 million, an annual turnover of $600 million from bus production, and at least five years of experience manufacturing buses (7.5 meters and above).

Punjab to invest Rs1.5b in modernising citrus industry

The Express Tribune
Jan 3, 2025

The Punjab government has announced a transformative investment of Rs1.5 billion to modernise and revitalise the citrus industry, Pakistan's leading horticultural export sector, according to the Pakistan Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association (PFVA).

The key elements of the citrus industry transformation project include the establishment of disease-free citrus nurseries with a capacity of producing one million plants annually, importing new citrus varieties to diversify the industry, and creating high-density demonstration orchards equipped with modern irrigation systems.

Mobile soil and water testing units will also be introduced, while large tracts of land will be leased to investors for setting up state-of-the-art orchards. The PFVA's roadmap highlights the urgent need to address the impact of climate change by introducing modern farming practices and resilient citrus varieties.
PFVA Patron-in-Chief Waheed Ahmed said, "The citrus industry is Pakistan's number one horticulture exporter, but climate change and outdated varieties are putting it at risk. The PFVA's recommendations have laid the foundation for this transformative initiative by the Punjab government."

The project also consists of certified private service providers for specialised orchards and the development of a citrus quality leadership programme.
This programme will incentivise farmers to produce export-grade fruit while enhancing Pakistan's competitiveness in international markets.

A modern pesticide residue testing laboratory, in collaboration with international partners, will ensure compliance with global standards, while a comprehensive international market research study will explore trends and opportunities for Pakistan's citrus exports.

A PFVA delegation, led by Waheed Ahmed, is set to meet the Punjab minister for agriculture and agricultural secretary to discuss the project's implementation.
"This investment reflects the Punjab government's commitment to safeguarding our citrus industry's future and mitigating the effects of climate change on this vital sector," Ahmed said.

The initiative is not only expected to revive the citrus sector but also strengthen Pakistan's position in the global horticulture market, ensuring long-term economic and environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, this groundbreaking initiative stems from the detailed recommendations made by the PFVA, whose efforts have brought much-needed attention to the challenges being faced by the citrus sector, including climate change and outdated farming practices.
