Punjab’s quiet acquisition of luxury Gulfstream jet spurs scrutiny

New or used, it represents a useless and unjustified burden on the public exchequer. No provincial government needs such a VIP transport jet, and even at a Federal level, only a few planes can be justified, and there are already more than that number too.

Begging for money internationally while living it large like this internally does not work well, since people see through it for what it is: corruption and hypocrisy.

Bhai the whole premise of this current government was that they HAD to come or else the previous guy would have somehow ended Pakistan. They never promised to end corruption or any of that shit.

• Accuses PTI of running vilification campaign on social and mainstream media
• Political leaders ask provincial govt to come clean on ‘extravagance’

LAHORE: Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb strongly condemned PTI activists and others for running a vilification campaign against Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz over the Punjab government’s decision to acquire a luxury jet.

CM Maryam has faced severe criticism from the opposition and some journalists regarding the government’s purchase of a luxury aircraft for her personal use.

“Elements engaged in character assassination against the CM on media and social media are affiliated with the PTI. The national media should expel and reject those operating under PTI’s foreign funding,” Ms Aurangzeb said in a statement on Tuesday.

She added that the PTI’s toxic mindset was spreading filth across social and mainstream media platforms, which was deeply regrettable.

The senior minister said the seeds of this vile, poisonous, and repugnant mindset were sown during PTI’s tenure. “This reflects the continuation of the PTI founder’s offensive thinking. The media should condemn the character assassination campaign against Maryam Nawaz Sharif,” she urged.

She further said that whenever legal action was taken against such campaigns, an outcry was raised in the name of curbing freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari described the PTI’s “gutter mentality” as a cancer clinging to the country and society.

The Punjab government acquired a luxury Gulfstream 19-seater jet worth between $38 million and $42 million (over Rs10bn) for the chief minister’s use.

Initially, the Punjab administration remained tight-lipped about the acquisition, but later claimed that it was part of a proposed airline project.

When questions arose about the absence of a roadmap for the airline, the government later stated that the previous plane used by CM Maryam had become old and needed replacement with a “safe new jet”.

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram criticised the purchase as an “extravagant expenditure amid economic hardship”, arguing that it contradicted the government’s public calls for austerity while citizens face rising inflation, unemployment, and financial strain.

He argued that spending billions on a VIP aircraft is unjustifiable when a large portion of the population lives below the poverty line and the country relies heavily on foreign loans. He warned that PTI would hold those responsible accountable for what he termed misuse of public funds.

Adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Finance Muzammil Aslam pointed out that, while the federal PML-N government sold 75 per cent of Pakistan International Airlines shares for just Rs10 billion, the Punjab government purchased a jet for Rs11bn.

Similarly, Jamaat-i-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that while the prime minister celebrated the PIA sale, his niece, CM Maryam Nawaz, went ahead and purchased a luxury aircraft for “elite” travel.

What a bile inducing individual Maryam is.

For her and her spokespersons' information, plenty of non-PTI loyalists are happy to assassinate her character for free.

corruption still ongoing nonstop by the kanjar ruling elites

what was the need to buy jets? The fleet of 20 protocols was not enough to bully ordinary pakistanis on roadways? Now they will do it in the air.

i hope the plane crashes with them onboard ! no sympathy for the kanjar elites

You (all) are being too harsh. At least the plane stays in Pakistan. If it were funds, they may be siphoned off to some offshore haven. The military can buy all sorts of toys without any scrutiny, but if the civilian government buys one plane, so much hullabaloo. Why is that?

1- At least the military doesn't give BS excuses like Air Punjab kay liay khareeda haiScreenshot 2026-02-25 at 23.31.52.png

2- Fauji aap ko ghar say chuk lain gay aur aap ki 3 pushtain zaleel hoti rahain gi. Then you'd be labeled as a foreign agent, Indian sponsored PTI traitor, or putting 'national security' at risk. Then we'l have a thread on PDF 'Countering propaganda against Pak Army' :)

What is this air Punjab?

Is it a provincial government owned airliner? Wasn't PIA enough of a lesson?

11 billion rupees had no other useful purpose? It is not like the whole of Punjab is developed, they could have laid electric transmission line to Buzdar's village with this money.

This story is a good snapshot of Pakistan , a country mired in poverty whose political and military elites fly around in private jets.

I suppose glass half full view could be they are not commandeering PIA planes anymore for their foreign and domestic trips.

Corruption and Pakistani society at large are irreversibly entwined, no matter what anyone in power promises or not. The entire edifice, from top to bottom, is involved.

No, I am describing this exactly as it is, and not harshly at all.

The misuse of such facilities at government expense is rife and must be called out for what it is: embedded corruption. And when such beneficiaries tell the people they are working day and night to improve their sorry lot, they are lying, and that adds the layer of hypocrisy that I called out.

I can tell you stories of how an ingrown toenail can be approved for treatment in a private hospital in London at government expense, but there are no antibiotics for a mother dying of septic shock during delivery.

Harsh? No. I have seen and know too much.

Well, you can convince me how anything that the military buys attracts far less scrutiny and criticism than this lone plane for Punjab government. The news said two planes were bought. One for the General and one for the government. Zero criticism directed at the need for the General to putt-putt around in a Gulfstream.

It's for poverty alleviation??,

thats very disturbing and alarming!

5 more years like that and future would cease to exist

there was a guy, who was arguing over why I made a post about, 'right to question self-proclaimed ulemas and religious leadership'

he was arguing about their right of being, 'above any questioning'!

sincerely, I wish, I would have died before reading his post

as much has I have distain for the military they actually have a case for the jet...a CM doest ... and further they lied shamelessly and army did not ... for a change.

Doesn't Punjab have a budget surplus? In that case it should be OK to invest in a jet for its top brass.

Regards
